Is Blue Buffalo safe for my cat? What are healthy food alternatives?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 13 lbs

I’ve always fed my cat Blue Buffalo, but recently I found out that people were having problems with the brand and some pets were even dying. Should I be concerned feeding my cat Blue Buffalo? What would be a good and healthy alternative?

Blue Buffalo is a terrible food, and I never recommend it. You'd be hard pressed to find a vet who recommends it. I would switch Billy's food. Brands I recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams.

Blue Buffalo is terrible! It is one of the worst foods on the market, and you'd be hard pressed to find any vet who would recommend it. Royal Canin is a great food, I highly recommend it. Eukanuba has a Daily Care Sensitive Digestion food that I recommend. Also look at Hill's Science Diet, and Purina Pro Plan. I hope this helps, Andrew!

I never recommend Blue Buffalo. It's a terrible quality of food, they have no quality control (they don't own their own factories), and there have been recalls on the food. I don't recommend Rachel Ray either. She's a TV chef with no experience in animal nutrition. As for the others, they are grain free. Grain free is a fad, and I never recommend feeding it. The foods I recommended to you in your other post are high quality. I hope this helps.

Neither. I do not recommend grain free dog foods because of the recent increase in dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets. The FDA is currently investigating that link. I would also never recommend Blue Buffalo, it's a terrible food. I recommend feeding Linda Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I hope this helps.

How many grams of protein should I feed my cat? What is the healthy amount? I keep hearing that Blue buffalo has way too much.
Unfortunately, I do not think you are going to get a consensus or simple answer to this question. The short answer is that we think the most biologically appropriate food for a domesticated cat is a mouse. And that is quite high in protein. In a young cat like Autumn wihout any health issues, I do not have a problem feeding a high protein food. Cats are obligate carnivores and generally thrive on a high protein diet. One thing you have to think about is that if the food is lower in protein, then it will have to be higher in carbohydrates and/or fat. Again, since cats are obligate carnivores, they are not able to utilize carbohydrates effectively and will often just gain weight on foods that are higher in carbohydrates. You also have to consider if you are comparing dry food or canned food. Dry food will "appear" to have more protein than canned food on the label, but often canned food is actually higher in protein. Unfortunately no, neither of those diets are ideal for kidney patients which benefit from lower protein diets. Royal Canin makes a whole line of renal diets for cats that come in a variety of textures, flavors that are usually more appealing to finicky cats than the Hills k/d. If BB won’t even eat the Royal Canin renal canned cat foods, however, eating something is definitely better than not eating, especially as cats can develop a serious condition called hepatic lipidosis from not eating for even two days. Inquire with your vet about approving the Royal Canin renal diets which you can find on chewy.com if your vet doesn’t carry it. Good luck!

Don't believe those sites. Typically they are written by people who have absolutely no training in animal nutrition. The best brands of cat food are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. They meet AAFCO standards, run feeding trials, and (most important), have veterinary nutritionists on staff that ensure the food is healthy and balanced. They are the only brands to have this. I feed my cats Iams, and they love it (including my Persian).

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! There have been a lot of issues with Blue Buffalo but most of what you read online is from upset pet owners who’s pets got sick or died and they want to blame a product or food. Sadly they do this with out evidence to back it up. If Patches is doing well it’s up to you if you want to change it. Blue Buffalo isn’t a brand I recommend. I recommend Hill’s, Royal Canin and Purina because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff. Have a good day!

Blue Buffalo is a terrible brand of food, and many animals put on it have diarrhea and other GI problems as a result. I NEVER recommend it. I recommend Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Adult HP dry cat food. Royal Canin is an excellent brand. I hope this helps!

Frankly, I do not care for Blue Buffalo products because they have a history of lying about their ingredients in their diets. Hills and Royal Canin are my preferred brands. There are other limited protein food brands out there, such as Natural Balance, which has formulas with a single protein source and a single carbohydrate source, making it less likely for your cat to develop an allergy.

I would recommend using the food that Lil Man's vet recommend, at least at first. Once the issue is under control, you could consider experimenting with other diets. It could be fine, but better to start with the diet that your vet is comfortable with and feels will be helpful based on their experience.
