My cat is injured, won't move, and breathing fast. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

Hi, my cat’s come inside with wounds on various places of his body. Usually, after a fight he will sulk and feel sorry for himself for the rest of the day and then the next day he will perk right back up. This time I am more worried as his injuries look worse as what they are normally as there is (not large quanitities) abit of blood now and he is refusing to move and be touched; I cannot get to his wounds to clean them. It is worrying me because he is breathing fast and I’m unsure what to do.

The best option would be to have him seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. He may need to be sedated so that his wounds can be evaluated and cleaned. He will likely need antibiotics and pain medications. His rapid breathing and reluctance or inability to move are likely due to discomfort. Unfortunately, there is nothing OTC that you can safely give him for pain.
