Should I switch dog food? Purina vs Proformatrin for heart health.

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 37 lbs

I was just wondering what is a better food for my dogs, with all the articles coming out saying a lot of dog foods are not being recommended due to them lacking key ingredients for healthy hearts. I currently feed proformatrin (not the grain free ultra one but the one with grain), and some vets are recommending purina. I just wanted to know if proformatrin is a good food or if purina is better or if there is something else you would recommend?

I think Purina is better. They run their own feed trials, meet AAFCO standards, and have veterinary nutritionists on staff. They are only one of four food companies that have this (Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, and Iams {Eukanuba} are the other brands).

Foods made by Purina are good, but ones like ProPlan have higher quality ingredients than say Alpo or Beneful. In my opinion, Purina is the best of the supermarket brands, so getting a food made by Purina whether it be Purina One or Beneful is fine. I hope this helps!

Which is best? Wellness, Purina Pro, Hills. or Canidae? I know Purina Pro is recommended a lot on here but the amount of controversial ingredients listed is huge compared to Canidae or Wellness.
There really isn't controversy about Purina's ingredients. They are excellent. They have veterinary nutritionists on staff to make sure the food is good. Canada and Wellness do not have veterinary nutritionists on their staff. I would go for Purina ProPlan, but Hill's is equally as good (they also have veterinary nutritionists on staff). Opinions on Purina adult dog and puppy food for all 3 of my dogs?
Hello. Purina is a very good dog food manufacturer. They are one of the few companies that actually have veterinary nutritionists overseeing all of their clinical feed trials. I even visited their equine research center several years ago & their facilities & dedication to animal nutrition are phenomenal. Next to Purina, you really cannot go wrong with a Science Diet or Royal Canin food. These are generally the top 3 on any veterinarians recommended food list. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I would recommend a large breed formula based on his profile. I recommend Hill's, Purina ProPlan or Royal Canin. These are large pet food companies that do extensive research on their diets. They have veterinary nutritionists on staff as well. They ensure their diets are properly formulated by performing feeding trials as opposed to just chemical analysis in a laboratory. These are benefits not offered by smaller niche market companies. Which food brand is good for beagle between Purina pro plan and Royal canin beagle food?
Both brands of food are good but I prefer Royal Canin between the two. Pets who eat this diet tend to produce less stool (because it's highly digestible) which I prefer. Goldy is a cutie. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Purina ProPlan is just as good as Royal Canin and Science Diet, and the Purina you find in the grocery store is lower quality, but it's still the best of the supermarket brands. The reason it is lower quality is because it doesn't use the high quality ingredients, hence the lower price. I hope this helps!

Pro Plan is actually a good dog food. So unless your dogs have a problem with the food, I would not change. If you do indeed need to change dog food you can change to Royal Canine, Hill´s or Iams or any other reputable feed brand. Make sure you get a complete food for the size of your dogs. There is so much choice that it would be too much to list. I do not recommend Blue Buffalo as I have seen quite a few dogs on that brand who are not doing so well. Yes, definitely stay away from grain free dog food.

Good on you for doing this! Trusty needs a puppy formulated food still, and brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I personally feed my dogs Iams and they love it. Start the switch now, and do it slowly to avoid GI upset. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. Until more is known, I recommend avoiding grain free diets. Aside from the recent association found linking these diets to heart disease, they are typically higher in carbohydrates and calories than standard diets. This leads to weight gain. I recommend diets from Hill's, Purina and Royal Canin. These are large trust worthy pet food companies. They have veterinarians on staff to research and formulate their diets. Smaller companies just do not have these resources available. I hope this information helps!

Hello. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding Purina Dog Chow if your dog is doing well on it. Just because it does not have a fancy name does not make it a bad food & some of the really pricy brands are pretty crappy. Purina, along with Hill's & Royal Canin, are the most respected dog food manufacturers. These companies employ veterinary nutritionists to formulate & test their products on real dogs & this means more to veterinarians than any formula just based on laboratory data.
