My dog's nose is dry and scabbed. What's causing it and how to help?

Hello. I'm sorry to be asking so many questions lately, but Voodoo has a very dry and scabbed nose. I'm not sure what the problem could be and what I can do to help her poor nose!

You can ask as many questions as you like! That's what we are here for :-) It could be Voodoo has a skin infection, yeast infection, or a fungal infection causing this. I'd have her seen by a vet in the morning for this.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral or topical ) are needed to solve the problem. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). This presentation could be caused by an allergy, or an infection possibly caused by mites or bacteria. First of all, in order to get rid of all skin parasites I would recommend to give a good quality flea treatment and ask your vet to perform some skin scrapes and scotch tests to rule out skin infections. Allergies are usually against food, environment (trees, grass, dust mites) or fleas. Some treatment can be given to resolve skin lesions, like antibiotics and steroids. My dogs nose is starting to scab
There are many reasons for scabs on the nose. It can be related to an injury or autoimmune condition. It can also be related to a disease process within the nose. A physical exam is the only way to know what the cause is. Sometimes these pups even need a biopsy. I recommend to have Lucek seen by his veterinarian. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ariel. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She may need to have biopsies taken from the affected skin on her nose. I am concerned that she has developed an autoimmune skin disease where the body attacks it's own skin cells. In this case, an accurate diagnosis is necessary to prescribe medications to manage the disease. I recommend having her seems soon as the cracking skin on the nose can result in terrible bleeding if it gets deep enough. I hope this information helps!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hi! That doesn't sound too serious to me. It's possible that the area is itchy and she is scratching at it, causing the scabbing. She may be getting insect bites in this area. Keep an eye on her skin, and if this continues, you could always have Zoey checked out by her vet, to be sure there are no skin parasites, or anything else to worry about.

Hello, what is this? Does this require any extra medical attention? Or is it just dry skin that can be treated with a lotion?
This looks like it might be a bit more serious than dry skin - it looks like there is an ulcer on the nose and I can see a spot where there is loss of pigment. This could be from a nasal fungal infection, a bacterial infection of the nose, or an autoimmune disease. I’d recommend having Murdoc examined by your vet to determine what might be going on.

My cat's nose is all of the sudden very dry, rough, and looks scabby. She is only 5 and is an indoor cat, but we so have 3 other cats as well. Thoughts on what this might be? The last photo is what her nose normally looks like.
It may be the start of a fungal or bacterial infection or growth of some sort. You can try to apply a warm compress to see if it will loosen some of the scabs without hurting her for tonight. You will have to talk to your vet about further testing such as a culture or biopsy and medication to clear it completely though.

It sounds like it could be a skin infection. I would recommend calling your veterinarian and scheduling an appointment. They will be able to dispense oral antibiotics and/or a medicated shampoo to help resolve these spots. If you cannot get in today then I would recommend an elizabethan collar so he does not lick at the areas and make them worse. We noticed some scabs on our dog’s nose. She also has bumps on her forehead. Any idea?
Scabs like that can be a few things. Sometimes it’s a one time infection. Sometimes it’s related to allergies and sometimes it can be related to hypothyroidism. Your fastest option is to have her examined by the veterinarian. Lesions on the nose may not heal very well with topical medication because pets lick it off. Often they are prescribed systemic medications since they travel in the bloodstream. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
