Dog broke nail, in pain. What safe pain relief can I give her?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

My dog broke her nail and the vet cut it down to the base this morning and wrapped it up to stop the bleeding. She seems to be in pain. What can I give her?

Unfortunately there are no pain relievers you can give Khaleesi that are OTC. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If she's in a lot of pain, I'd take her into a vet now to get pain medication, even if it's an ER vet.

Oh no, poor Khloe! She's adorable! I'm sorry to hear that she is so uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there are no safe over the counter pain medications that can be given to dogs. You can try applying a cool compress to the nail bed if she will tolerate it to decrease any existing inflammation/irritation. Also be sure to keep an e-collar (cone) in place to prevent her from damaging the nail bed further, as this could introduce infection. If Khloe can't seem to settle down and get comfortable, you may need to make a trip to an emergency vet tonight to start her on pain medication. I hope that she is feeling better soon!

There are no pain relievers you can give Little Bit. As I said in your previous post, many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can try soaking her toe in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps, but she really should see a vet for her pain.

She sounds very painful, and it would be best if she saw a vet tonight. You can take her into an ER vet clinic; if you don't have one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. If you absolutely cannot get her into a vet tonight, keep her as quiet as possible and take her into the vet first thing in the morning. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Ouch, poor Bhai! Unfortunately there is no OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If he will let you, you can try to cut the nail off yourself, but it may be too painful for him and he may have to be sedated in order for it to be removed safely. Should he not let you do it, I would take Bhai into the vet today to have him sedated and have the nail removed. I would not let him try to get it off himself, as it may easily become infected. The vet can safely removed it for him.

Unfortunately no. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe.
