My dog eats grass. Will a greens supplement stop them from eating it?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 17 lbs

Is this particular supplement a benefit for dogs who like to occasionally eat grass? I don’t believe In overduing suppplements but this appears to contain concentrated sources of greens and chlorophyll. Is that something that may help fulfill my dogs need to comsume grass?

Typically dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach. This supplement will not be a benefit for Chloe. It won't do anything for her. I recognize your dog and know from previous questions that you are very diligent pet owner. She will be getting all the nutrients she needs from the diet you give her.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Based on your description, it sounds as though Chloe is dealing with a potential GI upset. Dogs will begin eating grass when they are nauseous or it may be behavioral. I would recommend switching her diet to something different such as Science Diet , Royal Canin or Natural Balance. You are welcome! Some dogs just like the taste! This is pretty common. It doesn’t necessarily mean a deficiency in diet. I remember you from other questions about Chloe, and recall you are very on to it with her nutrition, so I don’t think that’s the case here. Sometimes dogs can eat grass due to nausea, but you’d like see other signs of stomach upset with that like drooling and a loss of appetite. I suspect she likes the taste. It’s not harmful as long as there are no pesticides on the grass.

I'd keep Fifi on her normal diet. Eating grass is something a lot of dogs do, and it's usually because they like the taste or may have an upset stomach. There's no need to change her diet if she's doing fine on it. You don't need to add the yeast or wheat grass powder to her food.

My dog has been eating a lot of grass recently. Today she threw up two puddles of vomit with grass in it. Should I be concerned? She's on a high quality diet. (natural balance) Does she need chlorophyll or something?
This could indicate a mild case of stomach irritation called gastritis. Dogs have no need for chlorophyll. If she's eating a balanced commercial diet and absorbing it Chloe should be getting all the vitamins and minerals and needs. As long as Chloe is eating, drinking and acting normally you could watch her dog now. But if she stops eating, vomits blood or coffee-ground looking material, or seems painful she should get checked out by her veterinarian

It's possible that Lola may be having a bid of stomach discomfort. You might consider switching her to a diet formulated for sensitive stomach along with the addition of a multivitamin/probiotic supplement. While the grass itself may not hurt Lola, you'll want to be sure to consider any pest or week control that's been sprayed on the soil for the last year or so as well as any parasites that may be living in the soil.

Some dogs acquire a taste for grass and will chew it for no reason. However, it could be a sign of an underlying problem as well. I would suggest you give him an antacid tablet once per day every day for about a week or two to see if it helps. I assume you can get Famotidine in Bulgaria at your local pharmacy? He can have 10mg once a day. I would give it on an empty stomach and then wait 30 to 40 minutes and then offer his food. I would try this first to see what happens.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Actually, most dogs that eat plants, grass or dirt do not do it because of a lack of minerals, vitamins or any other essential ingredients. With that in mind, while vitamins are not going to hurt, he may not really need them. In most cases, we never find out why they eat plants. I encourage avoiding this behavior as sometimes they do this because the grass or plant has been sprayed with chemicals that sometimes have a smell/taste to them which is a reason why they may do it. I would discourage this behavior as much as possible and if he is already eating a complete and balanced diet, there is no need to add vitamins or minerals of any sort. I would also avoid Blu from eating this plant as sometimes it can actually have a toxic effect causing gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea and can even be more toxic when large amounts are ingested. Hello, sorry to hear about Layla. There are some medical causes for pets eating grass. These may include an upset stomach from inflammatory bowel disease, a dietary indiscretion, or parasites. Other less likely causes include mineral deficiencies, which are very rare especially in patients that are being fed a commercial diet. However, most commonly, we may see pets eat grass due to a learned behavior abnormality. Most of the time this behavior does not escalate to other complications, however, Layla could be exposed to parasites and other infectious agents when eating grass. You may try an alternate food for her to see if this changes her eating habits. Alternatively, you can use a basket or grazing muzzle on her when she goes outside. Finally, avoiding areas with tall grasses could decrease the amount of grass she eats. If none of this is working, you should contact your veterinarian to have her evaluated for mineral deficiencies and offer a consultation with a behaviorist. Hop

Some dogs simply like the taste of certain grasses. They may also graze out of boredom, curiosity or in an attempt to correct a nutritional deficiency. Other dogs may "self medicate" by eating grass to treat mild stomach upset. This is typically followed by vomiting. He is likely not eating grass due to intestinal parasites. You would need to submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites. If he is behaving normally and tolerates the grass, there's no reason or need to stop him. Don't allow him to graze on grass treated with fertilizers or pesticides.

Our dog grazes like a goat. She loves to eat grass and she also digs a hole and eats the dirt. She never vomits afterwards, so we're curious why she does that. Do we keep letting her eat grass and dirt, or make her stop?
It is fine to let her graze on grass as long as it isn't treated with fertilizers or insecticide. Try to prevent her from eating dirt though. This can happen if she is trying to correct a nutritional deficiency. Review her diet with your veterinarian and monitor her when she is outdoors.
