Pregnant dog only eats bread before labor. What should I feed her?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 30 lbs

Bailey doesn’t eat anything other than bread. She is in her last few days before labor. What should I do? Continue with bread or anything else that we could introduce? We tried fish , chicken and dog food as well.

That is not a good diet for Bailey at all. There's no protein or calcium for her, which is desperately needed during pregnancy. You should take her into a vet now, I'm concerned something could be wrong with her if she's not eating.

It could be that Bailey is getting ready to go into labor. Dogs often lose their appetite before giving birth, but it is concerning that she is crying. It may be labor pains, however. I would monitor her, and take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. Once it drops below 100F, she will deliver puppies within 24 hours. Should 24 hours pass after the temperature drop with no sign of puppies, Bailey will need to see a vet immediately.

Sometimes their personalities and appetites change while pregnant. If you don’t already I would try to put her on puppy food. Puppy food has more calories and nutrients to help nourish a pregnant dogs body during pregnancy and while nursing. If she still won’t eat puppy food then you may want to try some boiled chicken (no bones) and rice. If she still doesn’t want this food or her appetite doesn’t pick up, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet can make sure she is handling the pregnancy okay. Your vet may want to check her bloodwork and give her some fluids if she is dehydrated. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry that Ginger is not feeling well. It is concerning that she is not eating well for the past two days. You could try to feed her a mixture of plain boiled chicken and plain white rice to see if this will stimulate her appetite. If she does start eating it and there are no other signs of illness, then I would start to transition her to a puppy food. She should eat puppy food throughout her pregnancy and while she's nursing the puppies. If she still refuses to eat, i do think you need to take her to the veterinarian. They will most likely recommend doing some blood testing and possibly x-rays of her abdomen as there are many things that can cause a decreased appetite. I hope this helps and that Ginger gets feeling better soon!

It's really not good for her. It's not balanced at all, and doesn't meet her nutritional needs for pregnancy. It's quite concerning she is pregnant and won't eat, so I would take her into a vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.

Poor girl. 5 days is a long time for a pregnant dog to go without eating. At this point the best advise is to take her in to your vet to get looked at. Something could be wrong with the pregnancy and she needs to get tested to determine if an infection is present or what the case may be, and then treated. I hope your girl Kiki is going to be ok. Take her in asap for further testing and treatment to hopefully ensure her health and the health of her puppies. Best wishes and take care.

She needs to be eating something, or she will have very little energy for the whelping. Take her to the vet for xrays, then you'll know the size of the litter and will know if she's having trouble or needs a c section. While there, ask for cerenia injections for the next few days, as this is a fantastic anti-nausea drug that has all kinds of benefits. In this case, I'm hoping it will get her eating for you. If she had a dead pup last litter, that tells me she may be dealing with some uterine inertia during labor, and could benefit from calcium or oxytocin injections, but this requires your working with a reproduction veterinarian through this process. I would recommend trying boiled chicken and white rice. However if she will not eat it could be a sign of an issue with her pregnancy. The uterus and fetus can become infected and cause severe anorexia I would make sure you are weighing her every few days to make sure she is not loosing weight if she continues to. It eat or looses weight I recommend taking her to a veterinarian for evaluation.

Rita is in her final 10 days of pregnancy. She is not eating her dryfoos. I offered her raw chicken neck and she ate it, she seems she preferred it over dryfood. Is that ok?
It is not recommended to feed her anything raw because she could get a severe bacterial infection from the raw food that could make her lose her pregnancy or harm the puppies (like E coli or salmonella). She should be eating puppy foof during pregnancy as it is higher in calories. So maybe try some canned puppy food or if you want to cook the chicken necks, etc you can do that. NO BONES! In the future, it is not recommended to breed dogs until they are at least 18 months of age. She isn't even full grown herself yet.

Poor girl! I would offer her a home cooked meal of plain boiled chicken and rice to see if this helps to entice her to eat. If she after a few days of being on vitamins and she still isn't acting right then I would contact your ve to do additional diagnostics. If your vet hasn't already I would ask them to do a fecal to check for intestinal parasites and blood work to make sure everything else looks ok. If she is close to the end of her pregnancy this could all be normal in preparation for labor. A lot of dogs will have a decrease in activity and appetite in the last 3-5 days of pregnancy. The normal gestation period is 62-63 days. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry to hear your dog is having issues with eating. You mentioned that she is pregnant; the hormone changes in dogs can affect their appetite, similar to people. I would recommend offering her a bland diet (such as chicken and white rice) to see if that would be more appealing to her. If she is continuing to have issues, I'd reach out to your regular veterinarian to discuss if any medications (anti-nausea or antacids, for example) may be needed. Good luck!
