My cat was exposed to 3% lemongrass oil spray. Is she okay?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

I'm worried because my cat walked around in a room I had sprayed a bedbug spray in that had a 3% concentration of lemongrass oil. The bottle said it was safe around pets but shortly after it happened I read that lemongrass oil is toxic to cats! It's been about a hour or so since she was exposed and she doesn't seem to be suffering or acting any different but I just really want to know if she'll be okay, I'd be devastated if I hurt her.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Kitty. Because it's a 3% concentration, she should be ok. It's more concerning with higher concentrations. I'd just not use it again in the future. I hope this helps!

Hello there, With such a short exposure time and you already opening your windows to increase air flow, I believe your cats should be just fine. You can use essential oil diffusers, but you need to use oils that are not known to cause toxicities, dilute them heavily, and only use in a space with good air flow, or an open window. Hello, and thanks for your question about Mandu. Cats can be very sensitive to essential oils, and there is limited data available for many essential oils (as far as how much is required to start seeing symptoms), so you should refrain from putting any on Mandu in the future. For now, if she otherwise seems to be acting normal, I would make sure you get any residue off that's still on her skin, and watch her closely. You can "spot clean" the area with a mild soap (I often recommend Dawn dish soap) and lukewarm water. The most common symptoms of thyme exposure would be GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), or neurologic disturbances (mentation changes, seizures, etc) so if anything seems "off" with Mandu then a vet visit is warranted. Hope this helps! I bet Mandu will do ok, but it's good to keep an extra close eye on her for the next 48 hours.

I poured peppermint oil all over the house to prevent insects from coming in not knowing how harmful it is to cats. My cat is showing no signs but I’m extremely worried because I can’t get the scent out of my house and I don’t know what her inhaling
The biggest problem with essential oils is not the smell, but when the oil gets onto the cat and they lick it off. This can happen when the oil is aerosolized or if it is sprayed or poured and the cat walks through it since they will then lick their paws. So, if you have sprayed or poured the peppermint oil in an area that Luna may walk through, then make sure you wash the area well. The strong smell is mainly a concern if a cat has asthma and is not associated with the toxicity aspect of essential oils. I accidentally sprayed some perfume on my Persian cat she doesn’t have any wounds no reaction have been done I’m just curious if something happens.
Likely nothing will happen if it was just a light spray. In general these products will cause irritation the to nasal passage way. If you have any concerns, I recommend to call the manufacturer of the perfume. They will be familiar with the safety studies and will be able to tell you if the ingredients have toxic risks. I did research the name, and I could not find any information about it being toxic to cats. I suspect that if it was causing problems, it would have come up on my veterinary database. However, I am not a big fan of essential oils in cats. They do not tolerate them as well as dogs do. So, I would not use it again in my cats to be on the safe side. I think that they are going to be just fine. If they did start to show irritation - you will need to bathe in Dawn dish soap to get the oil off. I saw a bug in my home so I sprayed peppermint oil (Rodent Sheriff) outside my room door. I heard my cat outside my door. I do not know if the oil was completely dry when he walked up to my door. Dry or not, he stepped in it. Is he going to be okay?
There is not a large amount of peppermint oil in this spray, and water is the first ingredient, so that means the peppermint oil is diluted. This lessons any toxic effects. Because you wiped Storm's paws with water after he stepped in it, he should be just fine :-)

I have plants with a mealy bugs infestation and would like to treat them with Neem oil. I have found information saying it has been used safely on cats for fleas and ticks, and would like to check that it is okay to spray the plants which my cat sits
At the proper concentration, Neem Oil is generally considered safe. It is not listed as a toxic plant product for pets per the ASPCA Poison Control Center or Pet Poison Helpline. In its undiluted form though, Neem Oil can potentially irritate the skin surface, especially on already-irritated skin, or if left on for more than 24 hours at a time. In addition, if a non-diluted or insufficiently diluted product is used on a pet and the product is consumed, then a pet could exhibit excessive salivation, appetite changes, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. At the dilution rate you described there should be no issues and I think it will be fine to use. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Cats are especially sensitive to peppermint oil, and if ingested, it can caused GI upset, central nervous system depression, and even liver damage if enough is ingested. I would not allow Kiki in your room at all at the moment, and to be safe, I would wash your bedding before allowing her back in. In the future, refrain from using peppermint oil.

You're right that cats can be very sensitive to essential oils, so it's always recommended to be very cautious when using these oils around them. If Odie is acting normal (eating and drinking, active, etc.), it's unlikely that he would have been negatively affected by any essential oils that you may have used in the past. You could take him to your vet for a check-up and blood work to check his liver and kidney function, if you want to be absolutely sure - but if he's clinically doing fine, he's probably okay :) In the future, it would be best to double-check the safety of any oil you are considering for use in your home to avoid problems.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. As long as your cat doesn't eat/drink an excessive amount of this shampoo, she should be just fine. And as long as you didn't get any into her eyes, she should be OK. In the future, it is not recommended to use human shampoos on animals - there are special animal shampoos that are not as irritating if gotten into the eyes, and nontoxic if consumed. I recommend monitoring for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or any neurologic signs such as tremors or seizures. These could indicate a toxicity. If she is squinting her eyes, this could mean you got shampoo in her eyes and caused damage to her corneas. If you see any of these signs, she should be seen by a veterinarian right away.
