Dog scratching a lot and has a leg sore. Is it fleas or allergies?

Hi my dog has been scratching for the past week or two and he has now got a sore on his leg. He has no ticks and I can’t see any fleas but I don’t know how small they are if I’d be able to see them easily? I have now noticed he’s got a sore on his leg (I think this is from scratching himself but I’m not sure)

I would suspect the sore is from Watson scratching himself. Dogs can scratch hard enough to cause these sores. He could have fleas even if you aren't seeing any, but this can also be caused by mites or allergies. Given how badly he's scratched himself, I'd have him seen by a vet today or tomorrow to have this diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps!

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skinscrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching.

Poor Lily. This looks like it could be an allergy, but without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. Unfortunately you cannot treat this yourself, she needs to see a vet to have this diagnosed so it can be treated correctly.

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Luckie with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advocate or advantage), then get him to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting him on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

Any number of skin conditions, parasites or allergies will make a dog itchy. I recommend getting him seen by your vet for an exam. Depending on what s/he finds, your vet may want to do further diagnostics, such as a skin scrape or labwork, or the cause may be more easily seen by an expert eye. Your dog may need therapeutic bathing, antibiotics, better flea control, or something more intensive, it all depends on what is causing the itching.

What is wrong with my dog?
Skin lesions like those in the pictures can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection (like mites or ringworm), dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, trauma (such as from scratches/bites from another animal) or a combination of the above. Some of those lesions look quite deep and are likely pretty sore, so I recommend making an appointment to have Bogart seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the lesions you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In the meantime, you can bathe Bogart in hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs to clean the affected area, but this will likely not resolve the lesions.

This looks like a classic flea allergy. I know the bleeding scared you but I would not be overly concerned with how easily it bled. That is fairly normal for this problem in my opinion.
