My dog has a UTI and won't drink water on antibiotics. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 13 days old | 46 lbs

My 7 mo female lab has a UTI, squatting, dribbling, seems to be uncomfortable and not passing any urine with stream. She's on cephalexin 500 mg but is NOT drinking any water, turns her nose up to it.... I'm able to get her drink 'some' weak broth. Nose is warm and dry, she's still playful, so not completely lethargic -- but I'm worried Beverly Robinson

Hello Beverly! Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Abbi. I can understand why you are worried about her. The nose being warm and dry is not a sign of illness. A dog's nose can go from wet and cold to warm and dry just by laying next to a heat source or in the sun. Now it is concerning she won't drink water. Feed her canned food and add water to it. I would have her seen by a vet in the morning if she still isn't drinking water. Best of luck.
