My cat stopped eating, drinks a lot, and seems sad. What's wrong?

Hi Emily. Poor Miri. A loss of appetite is a very general sign of many illnesses, and it's actually extremely serious when a cat won't eat. If she goes long enough without eating (about 72 hours), she will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. You need to take her into a vet now.

I doubt very much that the litter change had anything to do with the signs you are currently seeing in Misu. Lack of appetite and not drinking water are both serious problems that could be caused by pain, nausea, internal organ problems (like kidneys or liver), or intestinal issues. Unfortunately these are very vague signs and he will need some tests, like bloodwork, urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to determine what is going on, and how to treat it. I urge you to call again and make an urgent appointment, or take him on to see an emergency veterinarian tonight.

Cats that don't eat are at risk to develop fatty liver disease so she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause of her problem. Your vet can do a complete examination, run bloodwork, and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. She could have an infection, parasite, liver/kidney disease, diabetes, pancreatitis, dental disease, etc. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to treat.

It sounds like Kitty is sick if she rarely eats. It's quite serious when a cat barely eats, as they can develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. Unfortunately, anorexia and lethargy are very general signs of illness, and can be caused by systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. I would have her seen by a vet right away for a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis to diagnose what is causing her symptoms so she can be treated.

I am sorry to hear about Annabelle. If she is not eating and now not drinking these are definitely signs of concern that require evaluation by a veterinarian. In particular, if she is an overweight cat (it says on your information that she is 14 pounds) then she is at risk of developing a dangerous liver condition called hepatic lipidosis if she isn't eating. There are many possible underlying causes for her symptoms, including primary GI disease (such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, stomach ulcer, gi tumors, gi infection, pancreatitis, cholangiohepatitis) or disease of the liver or kidney (either of these can cause increased thirst). The vet will want to do an examination and will likely recommend bloodwork and an x-ray to try to determine the cause of her symptoms. She may need to be prescribed an appetite stimulant, and may need fluid therapy if she is dehydrated.

These are general signs of disease, unfortunately almost any disease can manifest itself with those symptoms and for this reason I won't be able to give you an idea of what could be causing this. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet ASAP for a physical examination, if nothing obvious will be found she will probably need a blood test or an ultrasound and the vet will then treat him according to the results.

Your cat sounds very ill! It's quite serious when a cat doesn't eat for more than three days, as it makes them prone to developing a fatty liver. It's also serious he isn't drinking water, he is likely dehydrated. You need to take him into a vet immediately. He needs IV fluids, and any other treatment the vet deems necessary. He could have a severe systemic illness or organ disease causing these symptoms. Please take him into a vet now.

Poor Katrina! Unfortunately, these are very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost any kind of illness, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. She may have a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, some type of infectious disease like FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), or even cancer. Not eating for more than 24 hours in cats always warrants a vet visit, because they can develop a serious liver problem called hepatic lipidosis when they don't eat, in addition to whatever illness is causing the inappetance in the first place. So, I would definitely recommend taking Katrina to the vet today for an exam. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
