My 43 lb puppy was prescribed 250mg Azithromycin. Is this dose safe?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Binnie. You can give a dog up to 5mg per pound of body weight as a dose, which is 215mg. This is a little above, but it should be fine. I would not worry. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Azithromycin is an antibiotic. We commonly prescribe it for upper respiratory infections or infectious coughs. I have used it to speed up the regression of viral papillomas. The medication is once daily and should be given with food. I would give her no more than 0.50 mls once daily. I hope this helps!

My dog is 8 months old and 43 lbs. he was prescribed Azithromycin 250 mg. I gave him hia first dose 2 hours ago and he just threw up. Should I give him his dose tomorrow? Or should I try cutting in half?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Binnie. Because he threw up two hours after you gave him the medication, the majority of the medication should have been absorbed. I'd give him his normal dose tomorrow, but if he vomits again after that, give his vet a call. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Boop by Petco to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Laila. Finally, the safety of using Azithromycin in nursing dogs has not been determined, so I would not recommend using it in her. It is never say to try to treat your dog yourself, as you could accidentally give a medication that is harmful to her or inappropriate to use. I would take her and her puppies into the vet today for an exam and treatment. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Love Saki’s name! You are correct in your calculation, but 250 mg is not too much for Saki. Clavamox is only available in certain tablet sizes, including 125mg and 250mg. We never want to under-dose antibiotics, so we will often round up to the next best tablet size. As long as Saki is taking the antibiotic with food, GI side effects should be minimal. I hope this is helpful!

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Please, get in touch with your local vet to discuss the treatment as it sounds that the dose should be slightly adjusted.

A normal dose of Zeniquin is 2.75-5.5 mg/kg, and your puppy ingested 12.2 mg/kg. As an antibiotic, this medication may cause possible transient vomiting, diarrhea, or a loss of appetite. In young puppies given high doses of Zeniquin daily for 2-4 weeks, lameness and cartilage problems were noted in a study, but this would not be expected after a one-time ingestion. At this point, I recommend feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days to decrease stimulation to the GI tract. After a few days of this diet, you can gradually transition back to puppy food over another 5-7 days. If you need additional peace of mind, you can call the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435. Unless they direct otherwise, I cannot see any benefit in giving activated charcoal or other decontaminants after an antibiotic. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This depends solely on her weight. If she truly is 105 pounds like it says on her profile, then this should be fine as that would be actually a low dose. The use of antibiotics without a proper veterinary evaluation is not recommended as it can result in antibiotic resistance, especially if the patient is underdosed chronically. If Bella has not been evaluated by a veterinarian, I would recommend she is before continuing any antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello. I would be a little concerned as to why a puppy this young could come down with a cold. The immunity a puppy gets from its mother usually remains very high until it begins to wane around 8 weeks of age. That is why we start puppy vaccinations at this time. My best advice is to have the puppy examined within a day or so of you obtaining possession. I am not concerned about the Zithromax as this is usually well tolerated, but I would like you to make sure the puppy's heart & lungs sound normal. If everything checks out fine, then the respiratory infection should have no impact on the overall health & growth of your puppy. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

I recommend giving it according to your vet's recommendations. The specific mg dose will be determined according to your dog's weight, and without that information I can't verify the specific dose - but I do not worry about this medication harming the kidneys.
