Dog had a seizure, now has low heart rate & panting. What treatment?

What would you give a dog if he was brought in after having a seizure and hardly a heartbeat and low bp and panting breath

First I would attempt to stabilize the dog. I would sedate the dog to get an airway, and put in an ET tube to help with breathing. IV fluids would be given. Then I would run blood work and a urinalysis to try to see what is going on. If another seizure occurred, I would administer anti-seizure medications.

The more seizures a pet has the most sensitive his nervous system is to them. If Bailey is not having rapid breathing then this could be because his other organs are now becoming affected by the seizures. It is best to take him to your vet for a baseline bloodwork screen to ensure he is not anemic, or have any other internal changes caused by the seizures. If he does then he may need treatment. And if his seizures are currently not being controlled and well managed (less than 1 seizure a month, and occurring for less than 2-3 minutes), then it is best to get him on anti-seizure medication for his safety and well-being.

I think it is more likely that the high temperature was due to the seizures. Their bodies shake so much that it is like they just ran a marathon. The seizures could certainly be brought on by tick disease, but could also be caused by liver or kidney issues, infection, epilepsy, etc. For these types of cases, I usually hospitalize on IV fluids, run a CBC and blood chemistry and urinalysis and tick tests, and monitor for additional seizure activity throughout the day.

No, this is not normal and may indicate she is having trouble moving enough air and oxygen around. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dusky. I am sorry to hear about her recent seizures. Most dogs will experience some side effects when first starting an anti-seizure drug. It can take a while for the dog's body to adjust to the medication. I suspect that is having the signs you have described from the phenobarbital. Her signs should resolve over several weeks. However, if she gets worse, has more seizures or does not seem to recover well from a seizure, then she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

Based on your description, I would recommend having x-rays taken for the raspy breathing and if these episodes continue to occur, consider placing Jordan on anti-seizure medications to see if that helps. For a further workup of these episodes, I would consider seeing a neurologist for a further exam and more diagnostics such as an MRI. I hope this helps! Poor Zoey. I'm concerned she could have had something like a seizure. She needs to see a vet immediately. If she seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near her mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt herself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

Oh poor baby. From the very little I know about her situation, I think she probably needs to be hospitalized full time and receive IV medications to try to stop the seizures or possible be put under anesthesia to allow her brain to heal a bit. It sounds like her prognosis is guarded at this point and she may not make it. There isn't anything you can do at home. Thank you for trying to take care of her and I hope she pulls through, but if she doesn't, then know you've done everything possible for her.

Oh My! Poor Pistol! It sounds like he got over heated. I would check his temperature rectally. If it is greater than 104 then I would put some alcohol on his pads and tips of his ears and continue the fan. Unfortunately, dogs that over heat will sometimes then begin to get really cold. If his temperature is less that 99 then I would turn off the fan and wrap him in some warm towels and check his temperature regularly. I am afraid that he has a brain injury due to the incident. This is a true emergency. From looking around your area of Livingston, TX, it looks like the closest emergency clinic is about an hour away. I would STRONGLY encourage to load him up and take him there for the best chance of survival. He likely needs some IV fluids and possible meds to help with brain swelling and to control the seizures. He needs medical attention now for the seizures, which can be caused by tumors, low blood sugar, liver failure, kidney disease, or Cushing's disease among other causes. There is nothing you can do at home to treat him for his seizures, please take him into a vet immediately.
