My cat's eye has green discharge and redness for months. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat has had green discharge for months. It's been off and on. He's had two rounds of antibiotics. The discharge will go away but the redness usually stays. The vet says his breathing sounds fine and doesn't think he has a respiratory infection. Dye tests for his eye didn't show anything. It doesn't seem to hurt him. But the corner if his eye is looking a little redder than before. Do you know what it could be?

Some cats can have chronic discharge related to an abnormal sinus. Chronic herpes can also cause this. I recommend to have your cat checked for Felv/FIV to make sure his immune system is normal. Then ask your vet about lysine and other supplements to support a healthy immune system. Omega 3 fatty acids for pets and a high quality diet will also help. Treat infections as needed. I hope this helps.
