My cat is losing hair, not eating, and sleeping more. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My cat is licking his hair off, has a tender back with some heat. Sleeping a lot more than normal. Today has not wanted to eat much of anything. Eyes are not bright and I don't know if he's drinking. He's bald on his tummy and back legs and hair is very very thin in the hip area. Also seems to have lost some hair around the neck. Also has lost weight. Any ideas what I'm dealing with? Thanks

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on with Jax. Not eating can be due to systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. The licking and hair loss can be due to fleas, mites, or allergies. Not eating will lead to weight loss. Have him seen by a vet for these problems today.

    I'm sorry to hear your cat is feeling under the weather. There are multiple things that may be contributing to his behavior, including GI upset, a uribary blockage (I would check the litter box to ensure he is urinating; if not he should be seen right away), an underlying medical issue (diabetes, kidney disease, liver issues) or an infection. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his behavior, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, bloodwork) and get started on any treatment that he may need. If he does, even if you can't find one right now I would be concerned that he suffered a bite of some kind, as cats can develop abscesses fairly easily when they suffer a trauma. I would be concerned by his behavior, as it does sound like there may be an underlying issue going on, such as an infection, GI upset, or an underlying medical issue (such as kidney disease or diabetes). If he doesn't perk up, start eating and getting some energy back, I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his change in behavior, have any necessary testing done (xrays, bloodwork) and start any treatment he may need to resolve it. Please get him seen by your vet as soon as possible, behavior changes and weight loss in an older cat are always a concern. I would recommend blood and urine tests to rule out a uti, kidney issues or a hormonal condition such as diabetes or thyroid disease

IF she isn't eating properly and losing weight, there is definitely something wrong with her, if she eats the wet food with great appetite, then the dry food must be the issue and that could be either due to a teeth disease or a partial GI blockage. either way you need to take her to the vet ASAP, she will need to be checked, especially her mouth, if nothing unusual is found during the physical examination the next step will be a blood test to try and find out what is wrong.

My cat has been lethargic for a few days, has a diminished appetite and feels significantly bloated. Also shedding quite a bit when I pet him and his coat feels a little coarser than normal. Not good, right?
You're right, it doesn't sound good. Possible causes for the bloat and decreased appetite include pain from arthritis, hairballs, food allergy, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, IBD, intestinal lymphoma, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. The shedding and change in coat texture could be due to a decrease in nutrition from not eating, but is likely caused by not grooming as frequently. I recommend that James go to the vet as soon as possible. After a thorough physical exam, your vet may recommend additional diagnostics like x-rays or bloodwork to try to determine the cause of his symptoms.

Hi. These are all very concerning signs and can be a sign of a serious problem. Many possibilities are out there for the cause from GI, infections, cancers, metabolic, endocrine diseases, and many more. We would need mode information on history and signalment along with an exam to get us down the right road. I would recommend a exam tonight or tomorrow morning.

my cat has been sleeping A LOT more than usual lately, almost all day and he makes a lot of sad high pitched noises almost everytime he changes his sleeping position... is that normal?
While Jax's symptoms are non-specific, you are right to be concerned. It is not normal to have such a sudden decrease in energy levels, and the high-pitched noises could indicate pain. I recommend you make an appointment to have Jax seen by a veterinarian near you to help determine what is going on so that it can be treated appropriately. This is concerning, and weight loss despite eating can be a sign of a medical condition like diabetes. The hair loss could be due to fleas, mites, or allergies. You need to have Bean seen by a vet for these issues, and I recommend getting blood work and a urinalysis done. I'd take him into a vet today.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! The excessive eating with weight loss is a classic sign of hyperthyroidism which is a fairly common condition in cats so this should be considered as a possibility. This is usually managed well with medications. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If this is confirmed, medications could be started at the time. The licking could be due to allergies for example and could be addressed at the time. Good luck!

It sounds like Archie may be sick. It sounds like he is lethargic and having a decrease in appetite, both of which are signs of illness. He could have a dental problem, systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury causing these symptoms. The drooling could be due to dental problems, pain, or nausea. I wold take him into a vet now to get checked out. I hope this helps!

Poor Lorelei! Sounds like she s has had a bit of a rough go at things recently. As far as the unkempt, greasy coat this could be due to her not feeling well and subsequently not grooming herself well. Alternatively she could also be dealing with an ongoing flea or food sensitivity. I worry about her weight loss and her decreased appetite though. This makes me worried she could be dealing with an underlying health issue such as an intestinal issue such (eg inflammatory bowel disease) or even some infectious disease (eg fip, felv) or even a kidney issue. I would have her evaluated by a veterinarian. They may suggest some blood work to look at her overall health to start and even test her for viral illnesses such as felv/fiv. They may also discuss other tests down the line such as an x-ray or abdominal ultrasound. I hope you get some answers soon and she is feeling better !!
