Should my home dog get kennel cough vaccine if other is kenneled?

Hi there, my family is taking a trip next month and one of our two dogs (Mayzie) will be staying at a kennel. The other (Charley), at home with a family member. We have an appointment for Mayzie to get her bordetella vaccination prior to us leaving. Is it recommended that Charley get hers aswell even though she will be staying home? Is there a chance Mayzie could bring kennel cough home and infect Charley, even after being vaccinated??

Yes, I would have Charley vaccinated as well. The kennel cough vaccine doesn't completely protect against the disease, but it makes the symptoms less severe if the dog gets it. This is because there are a number of different bacteria that can cause kennel cough. Mayzie could still get it, and yes she could bring it home and infect Charley.

Most likely if one of your dogs has kennel cough the other dog has already been exposed. Kennel cough is a very general term to describe infectious tracheitis. There can be many causes for kennel cough including mycoplasma which we cannot vaccinate for. I would recommend just monitoring your other dog for any coughing . If you notice coughing I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. Sometimes certain dogs will not get kennel cough due to stronger immune systems.

I have a rescue since March 2019 that is due for another kennel cough injection. Being that he is not longer in a shelter/rescue environment does he still need it?
Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection. She can still get Kennel cough even with this vaccine although it does usually reduce the chances of getting it and when a dog is vaccinated but still catches the disease, it is usually milder as well. this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dogs. Kennel cough is a generic term for an upper respiratory tract infection. While Bordetella is a common component of the infection, you are correct in that there are other causes. I do recommend the vaccine though as I seen respiratory infections very frequently. The vaccine can either prevent the disease or will lessen the effects of the infection. I hope this information helps!

Congratulations on your new addition! Kennel cough is an infection that occurs due to a large number of different infectious bacterial and viral agents. While a previous infection does not make Marley more susceptible to new infections of kennel cough, if he has been around a number of other dogs (dog parks, groomers, kennels), he is more likely to acquire another bout kennel cough. Very mild cases of kennel cough can resolve on their own, but more severe cases can progress to pneumonia. If you are concerned that Marley has been coughing (or his initial cough never completely went away), I recommend taking him to the vet for an exam. There is a chance that he may need another course of antibiotics or medications to dilate his airways to help him along. I hope that he feels better soon!

Even though Harley has had her kennel cough vaccination she can still get kennel cough. Has Harley been to the dog park, day care, kennel or even the groomer? She could have picked it up anywhere there are dogs. If the cough gets worse, isn't eating, has a fever (rectal temperature above 103F) or difficulty breathing it is highly recommended going to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Kennel cough can be viral or bacterial and is typically viral. Some veterinarians will place dogs on antibiotics to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. Ideally a veterinarian should listen to any dog that is coughing. I would call your veterinarian when they are open and discuss this with them since she just went there the other day. Is vaccine for kennel cough highly recommended?
The intranasal form has the fastest onset of protection. It is not considered a core vaccine, but more a lifestyle vaccine. If your dog will be boarded or kenneled for any reason it is highly recommended. If he will go to the groomers or be around new dogs at a dog park or anything, or you take him places with you, then i would get it to protect him. If he is not exposed to those things and just stays at home, then it is not needed

No, it's not likely to be related to the vaccine. It sounds as Charlie is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Congratulations on bringing Kaiyah into your household! Yes, it is possible she has kennel cough. The vaccine helps to decrease the strength of the infection in most cases but it may not fully protect. It’s just like how you can still get the flu even though you get the flu vaccine but you don’t usually get us sick. I recommend to call the shelter. They will likely want to see her again or refer you to a veterinarian. There are other causes of coughing as well including allergies. While cats technically can be infected with the Bordetella bacteria that causes kennel cough in dogs it is very rare. Cats are more likely to sneeze from a viral upper respiratory infection (usually caused by herpesvirus or calicivirus) that is cat specific. I don’t think you need to worry about Bocephus spreading a respiratory infection to your dog.
