My dog has tooth pain, vet closed. What can I give for relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 2 months old | 10.5 lbs

My 10 1/2 lb. Chihuahua/Toy Fox Terrier is having tooth pain. His gums look inflamed and he is having trouble chewing some things. I can tell by the way he looks that he doesn't feel good. My Vet is closed until Thursday. Is there anything I can do or give him to make him feel better until I can get him to the Vet? He is taking Thyro-tabs .1mg twice daily, Furosemide tablets 6.25mg twice daily & Enalapril Maleate tablets 2.5mg twice daily.

Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I think it's best if Little Bit is in a lot of pain to take him into an ER vet now.

Drop by your veterinarian. If he has seen your dog already he may give you pain medicine preoperatively as well as antibiotics. If he has not seen your dog yet, you will need to try and have him seen before Friday due to the pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain killers for dogs or cats available. Please do not give medicine for humans as most of those are toxic to pets.
