Why is my dog bleeding after a urinary catheter for bladder stones?

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 73 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with bladder stones after I had him x-rayed. Then, yesterday my vet inserted a urinary catheter and explained to me that the stones are gone. But since this morning he keeps bleeding. Can you please explain to me what's going on and what are the best treatments or medications that can possibly help my dog? Thank you so much!! I'm so sorry if the rontgen isn't very clear to see.

Inserting a catheter is irritating to the urethra, and that can be the cause of the continued bleeding. Without seeing Mimud in person, I can't say what are the best treatments for him. Have him seen by his vet again.

It's likely that you'll see blood for a while, based on the fact that she likely has a urinary tract infection (the reason for the Baytril) and that urinary stones are irritating to the bladder wall and can cause bleeding. In addition, catheterization can cause some trauma, so I'm not surprised that you're seeing a little blood. Assuming everything else is normal, and the blood starts to diminish over the next day or two, I think yes, this is to be expected, but do watch her closely for signs that she's getting blocked again.

Oh man! Poor Ray Ray! He’s had a rough couple weeks! So my guess is that it has to do with gravity. Blood in the urinary tract after these kinds of surgeries is common. I suspect the blood collects a bit at the tip of the penis but there is little urine making it all the way down there to flush it out. So it clots and comes out every once in a while. As long as they are small and not very frequent, I’m not very worried. If they are large or frequent, you should talk to your surgeon right away to see what they think. Unfortunately, I suspect that he needs further testing or repeat testing to determine the result. In cases such as his, a bleeding disorder, bladder cancer, a urinary tract infection or bladder stones are most likely. You may consider seeking a second opinion with an internal medicine specialist if his regular veterinarian has not been able to diagnose his problem. I hope this information helps!

Ongoing bleeding could be caused by a clotting disorder or low platelets or ongoing inflammation in the urinary bladder. Incontinence could be related to the trauma of the catheterization, administration of IV fluids, bladder inflammation, kidney failure, etc. You may want to discuss additional blood tests and bladder ultrasound with your vet.

My dog just had surgery this week for bladder stones, I brought her home today and I noticed there's still blood in her urine, is this normal?
It does take time for Little One's bladder to heal from the bladder stones, so yes you can still see some blood in her urine. She can bleed on and off after bladder surgery, but I would still monitor her. If the bleeding gets worse or she starts having difficulty urinating, I would contact your vet immediately. I hope she feels better soon!

Unfortunately, it could be that Olive has bladder stones again or a UTI. Certain dogs can be prone to bladder stones, and experience them multiple times. I would take her back into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, and a urinalysis to see if she has bladder stones again or a UTI, and can treat accordingly.

There are multiple causes of this and may include bladder stones that are not evident on x-rays, a resistant urinary tract infection, an enlarged prostrate, a prostate abscess, and less likely a bladder tumor. To further diagnose why he continues to have intermittent blood in his urine, he may need to have more diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and a urine culture. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. I am sorry that Cointhee has stones. Urinary stones are concerning because at any point one of the stones can cause a complete blockage of the urethra (tube you pee out of), and can block any flow of urine and this can lead to life-threatening kidney disease and death because the potassium cannot be peed out. Therefore, firstly, it is very important to make sure that Cointhee is able to pee out urine at all times, and isn't trying to pee with nothing coming out. If this is occurring please get him to a vet right away. Blood in the urine can be caused by the stones/crystals causing irritation, and can also be caused by infection that sometimes goes along with the stones. Repeated trauma to the urethra can cause strictures, and long term complications. I would discuss with your vet about taking some x-rays to see how many stones are present, and discuss if surgery is an option to remove the stones. I would also discuss about checking to see

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely due to the surgery to some extent. Some degree of blood in the urine would be expected but not a lot. I do think that it warrants re-evaluation by the veterinarian who did the surgery to make sure that there is nothing wrong going on with the incision or surgical site as those are complicated surgeries. This behavior can actually be a sign of a UTI or bladder stones. I'd have Monty seen by a vet for this for blood work and a urinalysis. Using these tests, the vet can diagnose if he has one of the things I mentioned above, and can treat him. I'd take him into a vet today. I hope this helps!
