Puppy UTI: Why is there blood in urine after starting antibiotics?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 7 days old | 9 lbs

We got an 8 week old puppy last Friday. Everything was great until Tuesday morning he started having accidents inside the house. I took him to the vet, they cathed him and diagnosed him with uti. He also had some crystals and protein in his urine. They administered a shot of antibiotics and gave me a 10 day course to start on the following day. Wednesday night he had blood tinge in his urine. Took him in on Thursday theybcathed him and said give it a couple days for abx to start working

Poor Scout. I agree, give him a couple of days to see if the antibiotics help. If they don't, his urine is very blood, he appears ill, lethargic, or distressed, take him back into a vet immediately.

Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

Frequent licking and blood in the urine are signs of an infection. However if it flared after the start of the antibiotics then I would pursue further testing. Did they do anytime sample tonxhexk for cells and crystals and see what bacteria what present? From there you need an X-ray or an ultrasound to make sure there are no bladder stones as this can require surgery or the problem will keep occurring without.

It may just be taking a bit more time for her. It is hard to say. The blood could still be possible as well. The lethargy may be from the antibiotics. If she is still like this tomorrow afternoon, I'd follow up with your veterinarian. Good luck.

If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. Recheck if he's not improving by tomorrow, and take him in immediately if he seems to be getting worse in any way. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

I would recommend taking Crybaby back to the vet for re-evaluation. Some dogs can have recurrent UTIs, but often they are secondary to a bigger issue, such as bladder stones, cancer, or anatomical issues. Another round of antibiotics may help, but may just cover up the bigger issue, again.

Blood in urine can be a sign of a urinary tract infection, but also a sign of a bleeding polyp or bladder tumor. So if your veterinarian found only blood in the urine and no bacteria or other germs, and if the antibiotic treatment lasted long enough, then the next step would be to have her bladder examined via a endoscopy, ultrasound or a contrast x-ray to rule out any masses. You may want to discuss this with your veterinarian and get a referral if your vet is not able to do any of those diagnostics.

I agree, I feel like there is more. UTIs are very uncommon in male dogs due to the length of their urethra. Bacteria would have to travel a looooong way to get from the penis up to the bladder before more urine came down to flush it away. On the flip side, female dogs are very prone to UTI because their urethra is very short from the outside to the inside, and is much closer to their rectum. More common causes of urinary issues in dogs includes urinary bladder stones, prostatitis, kidney infection/pyelonephritis, and sometimes infections of the testicles. I would recommend a thorough physical exam with palpation of the prostate (if possible, sometimes our fingers just aren't long enough!) and x-rays to look for stones. If the prostate is normal and there are no stones, then bloodwork to look at kidney function and/or a urine culture would be indicated. A less common cause for blood in urine would be bladder cancer or bleeding disorders. If you see Bubba straining to urinate, or if he d

Yes, you should take her back to the vet for a follow-up. She should have an xray to check to see if she has bladder stones. Bladder stones irritate the lining of the bladder which can cause bleeding. If it was a simple UTI I would have expected it to be resolved by now.

I'm sorry to hear that Snare has been having so many urinary issues. There are several possible causes for his ongoing bloody urine and straining. One possible cause is that the bacteria causing his urinary tract infection are resistant to the antibiotic being used. Others include the possibility of prostate issues, bladder stones, crystals or a bladder mass, which could be partially blocking the urethra or causing discomfort. I strongly recommend taking Snare to his vet first thing in the morning for further evaluation. Your vet will likely recommend additional diagnostic tests, which may include a urine culture, x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound. If Snare becomes unable to urinate or is straining, but unable to pass any urine, this is an emergency and should be addressed by an emergency vet immediately. I hope this helps and that Snare is one the mend soon!
