My cats puked after roundworm meds. Is tapeworm medicine safe?

We thought our cats had tapeworms and roundworms, but under closer inspection we saw that the worms looked like only tapeworms. We gave them medicine for roundworm (containing 250 mg of piperazine per 5 ml) and 3 out of 4 of them have puked. Are my cats gonna be okay? Would it be safe to still administer the tapeworm medicine afterwards?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. It’s fine to give them the tapeworm medicine but I would wait until tomorrow. Then give it to them with some food like white meat chicken (no bones). I hope this helps!

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. As long as the worming tablet was in for about 30min then you don't need to give a second tablet. However a 2nd tablet, as long as it is one designed for cats, won't cause a problem. They have very high safety margins. Best of luck with your kittens!

How long do I need to wait before giving my cat tapeworm medicine since she was given round worm dewormer
Unless your vet gave you specific instructions, the dewormers are different medications and do not interact, so they can be given at the same time. The only reason to separate the dewormers would be if there is a large worm infestation and the deworming is likely to cause diarrhea. To be on the safe side, you could wait 2 days after the roundworm medication to give the tapeworm medication. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If the first medication was only for round worms and wasn't broad spectrum (gets tapeworm too) then you can give a 2nd dewormer that JUST gets tape worms. I hope this helps and I wish Babycakes the best!

You can re-dose him. It is a very safe medication. But, if you didn't see any trace of the pill in the vomit I would suspect he kept it down. It would have been better to give it a few days after his anethesia. The anesthesia along with the medicine probably upset his stomach. For future reference, any time you give an oral pill to a cat it is best to "chase" the pill with a small amount of water to ensure swallowing. Hope this helps!

Puppies and kittens need a series of repeated deworming medications. And even if they have been dewormed, it is common for them to have other intestinal parasites since there are so many different types of parasites and they each require a specific type of deworming. What you are describing is likely tapeworms, so hopefully the tapeworm medication will work. I am including more information about tapeworms below. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442 Since tapeworms are transmitted by fleas, you will also need to make sure that Ariel doesn't have fleas or she may have tapeworms again. I would also make sure that your veterinarian has checked a fecal sample on her to see if there are any other microscopic intestinal parasites that need to be treated, but may require a different type of dewormer. Poor Timmy! If he also vomited up the tablet, you will have to give him an additional deworming treatment. I would wait until tomorrow to give him another one, and give it to him with some food, such as boiled white meat chicken (no bones or skin). Tapeworms can travel into the cat's stomach, which is why you would have seen him vomit one. It sounds like he has a heavy burden of worms. He will likely need another treatment with the deworming tablet three weeks after first deworming treatment (the ones that stays down and isn't vomited up) to kill all the worms. I hope this helps.

This would depend on the ingredients that you gave today and the ingredients in the tapeworm medication. There are a number of roundworm medications and I would not repeat a similar drug within 24hours but if the drug is a different drug class I would be less concerned. Your vets office may have a tapeworm only preparation available also. Please repost with more information on the active ingredients in the products if you would like further help
