My dog is clingy and whining after neuter. Is it pain or boredom?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 6 months and 21 days old | 36 lbs

My 6.5-month-old mini goldendoodle was neutered on Dec 5. Recently he has been whining like crazy if he can see me but I am in another room and been really clingy following me everywhere. I’ve been giving pain meds but I’m not sure if he is in pain, bored, or it’s something else. He doesn’t seem to be having a negative reaction to the meds (normal poop and appetite).

It's been about 10 days since Murphy's surgery, so he should be pretty well healed and not in pain. He may be bored. I hope you have only been giving pain medications prescribed by the vet. If you have been giving him human pain medications, that may be the problem as many of those are toxic to dogs. If you have been giving him human pain medications, take him into a vet now.

If this persists and does not resolve within 24 to 48 hours than I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Sounds like he is a lot of discomfort/pain; not unusual after surgery. Could also be some dysphoria from the drugs. Did they not send him home with some pain medications? If not, you need to call the vet and get some medications for him. If he is on medication, you still to call them as the dose may need to be adjusted up or down. I cannot recommend that you can give him over the counter medications as I do not know what drugs he has already had. The trailing of the urine can be a side effect of anesthesia/medications. I would not be overly concerned about that at this stage. All you can do is keep him calm and quiet and don't fuss too much over him or you will be reinforcing this behavior. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Roman. His incision site appears to be healing with only mild bruising and swelling associated with it. I do not see any appears that are opening in your picture. It would be unusual for him to still be painful a week after surgery. The collar may be bothering him, but if his behavior does not resolve, then I would check in with his veterinarian. If you are able to fully supervise him, you can try to take the collar off for a little bit. This will help you judge if the collar is causing the change in behavior. Whenever he is alone or not fully supervised though be sure that he is wearing it. I hope this information helps!

He may still be experiencing some pain and probably does not like the E-collar. You could call your vet and see if he/she could add an additional pain medication or change medications to see if it helps at all. Hopefully, he will be back to normal within a few days.

Neutered yesterday + scooting his but + whimpering.Pees fine but hasn't poop till morning. Tries to walk but sits down right away. Is this normal?
Pain after neutering does occur, and your vet can give you pain medication for him if they haven't already. After neutering, some dogs can be tired and want to rest a little more than usual. Keep an eye on the stitches where the surgery was done, and make sure they don't become red and swollen. Do not let your dog lick the stitches. Your dog likely didn't poop until this morning because they weren't allowed any food for 12 hours before the surgery, so they wouldn't have anything to poop out. Butt scooting can also indicate parasites, so if his worming isn't up to date, I would get worming tablets from your vet. If the incision site becomes red, swollen, and warm to the touch, I would contact your vet right away for an appointment. It is also okay to give your vet a call if you are concerned about your dog being in pain, and see what options they can give you for pain relief.

Poor Douglas! This sounds like a difficult surgical recovery. It sounds as though Douglas had not fully recovered from anesthesia at the time of his discharge. It is possible that the reaction that you saw was an excitement reaction from some of the sedative or pain medications he was given at the time of surgery. While this is not a normal reaction, it is also not uncommon to see a brief period of excitement after certain medications. Confirm that Douglas was sent home with some anti-inflammatory pain medications and be sure to find out when his next dose of pain medication is due, as he could be whimpering as a sign of pain. Otherwise, continue to keep him in the crate until he is able to stand and walk normally, and generally restrict his activity until his sutures are removed. Make sure that he is wearing an e-collar (cone) for the next 10-14 days to prevent him from licking at the incision. I hope that the rest of his recovery is uneventful!

My dog just got neutered and I dont know if hes ok or not. Hes acting really weird. What is usual behavior post neuter?
This really depends on what he is doing, and how long ago he was neutered. If the surgery was today, then he will likely be feeling strange and not himself for the whole evening. Depending on what kind of anesthetic drugs and pain medications he was given, he could be really whiny, needy, or just laying around. If he is really agitated, or trying to lick constantly, or seems really painful, then he may not have been given adequate pain medication and I would call your after-hours vet right away for further help. He may not be interested in food or water, and this can be normal, just for tonight. Tomorrow he should be eating and acting normally. If he is laying around and won't get up even when you stimulate him, this may be an emergency and I would call a vet right away, as this is certainly not normal. With my neuters, I always send them home the same day, fully awake, and with extra pain medication to go home with. Hope that helps!

Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Poor Silverado! It sounds like he is in pain, it from your description it sounds like the pain is more than what is expected. Typically dogs are sent home with pain medications, and if you have some, check when his next dose is due. Should he be due for some and it doesn't help or he doesn't have any, I would take him immediately into a vet. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
