My new pet rabbit's age is unknown. How can I figure it out?

We got a rabbit at a large chain store and they couldnt tell us exactly how old she is. Is there any way to determine the age?

Yes, a vet can examine Lola and give an approximate age. I would have her seen by a vet to have this done but to also get a health check. Sometimes animals from these large chain stores are not in the best health.

This rabbit looks like an english spot/ a mini lop or a dutch rabbit. They are often a combination. If the rabbit has testicles beside its bottom it is quite obvious. However if you cant see testicles i would get a vet to confirm its sex.

Should i take my new bunny to the vet?
It is always a great idea to take any new pet to see a veterinarian if at all possible. They can examine your bunny and make sure there are no health concerns - no skin parasites, good teeth and nails etc. They can also discuss husbandry and make sure you are feeding the most appropriate diet, and have a good housing set up. They may also recommend having your bunny spayed when she is a little bigger and older to keep her as healthy as possible. Congrats on your new bunny!!

Can I go to petco and have help with figuring out how old my puppy is? For free??
Yes you can take Lucky into Petco to have help figuring out how old he is, but you will likely have to pay a fee for it. The vet would be the best person to figure out his age, and you will need to make an appointment for it. That will be an office visit fee, but you will also get a full physical exam. The vet can advise about vaccines for Lucky as well. I hope this helps!

Hi, I have a rabbit that I purchased from pet supermarket but when I purchased it I didn’t receive any information (its age, breed, or gender). Is there a dna test for a rabbit that will tell me any of that information?
I am afraid there is no test. However if you only bought the rabbit recently, you can go back to the shop and they can tell you what age their rabbits were at a certain time of sale. As for the gender : male rabbits have two elongated testicles, one each either side of the penis, Females just have a little slit. As for its breed , you can upload a good photo from the side and we can try to figure out what breed your rabbit is.

Hi, about 5 months ago I got guinea pig from petsmarts they never said when her birthday is or how old she is. So I was wondering if a vet could do a DNA test to tell me how old she even if it's a guess
That is usually not possible and available. There are no genetic tests for it. The only way would be to have her checked by your veterinarian and age can be only guessed unfortunately. I was given a Nile monitor lizard for Xmas but the person didn't know how old it was. How do I find out the possible age range of my monitor
Hi. It’s really impossible to accurately age reptiles. We can guess that they are juvenile, sub adult, or adult based on size, but this is not terribly accurate. Since reptiles are ecototherms and their metabolic rate is related to their environment, nutrition and temperature affect growth. Therefore, reptiles don’t grow based on chronological age, but rather based on the appropriateness of their previous husbandry. So we can see 2 reptiles of the exact chronological age have very different body sizes if one is fed and housed under one set of parameters compared to the other. Your best bet would be to have a new pet wellness exam done by your veterinarian who can maybe give you an educated guess. Good luck and enjoy your new pet!

I am sorry to hear about your bunny! If she is scratching at her ears it is possible she could have ear mites or an ear infection. A vet will need to do a swab to look at under the microscope to check for these and then prescribe a medication to kill the mites. They can also trim her nails if they are excessively long which can cause problems in the future with the feet. They may be able to look for a spay scar on her belly to help tell if she was spayed. To reduce stress place her in a sturdy box that is dark but has some air holes, and a towel or hay in the bottom so it is not slippery, or a kennel filled with hay and a towel over the top to minimize the stress of travel. You can stay in the quiet car in the parking lot until the vet has a room ready to put you in so you avoid the sounds/smells of cats and dogs which might scare your rabbit if you let the receptionist know when you get to the clinic that you would prefer to wait in the car until they are ready for you so as to d

Hi and thank you for your question. The color of the eyes sounds normal for this age, some bunnies retain it for life. As to eyesight this may be tricky to access. They don't always react to hand movements. What you could do is place thumper in an unfamiliar room with some obstacles on the floor and try to see if he avoids them before he can actually feel them. As I said, it can be tricky. Obviously, a health check at your vet is also recommended.

Hi there. There is no way for us to age him without looking at his teeth. That being said, he appears to be between 6 and 8 weeks of age. You can take him to any local vet and they will age him for you. If you just got him from the side of the road he likely needs vaccinations and deworming urgently - you should have that done as soon as possible.
