My dog has high liver enzymes but acts normal. What could be wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

Best case scenario? Hi a few days ago my dog threw up & refused to eat so I took him to the vet. Blood work came back with very high liver enzyme lvls and bilirubin in the urine. Everything else was normal. We have an appointment Tuesday with a specialist. But my dog is acting normal now. Eating well, pooping, peeing, normal personality. What's the best case scenario? Could my dog had an acute infection? I'm anxious & want to know what he might have before our appointment Tuesday.

Yes, it could be acute hepatitis. If it was very serious though I would expect him to still be sick. Glad he is feeling better for now. Definitely keep the appointment with the specialist. For now, don't do anything differently with him.
