My dog has a lump on her belly that's getting bigger. Is it a tumor?

I have a question about this lump on my dogs belly. If I send a picture can I get an idea of what exactly it is? I want to bring her to the vet but I am also a 20 year old college student who doesn’t live with their parents so I am low on money always. If it is life threatening I want to bring her either way. It appears to be a tumor but I’m not a veterinarian or tech. It doesn’t bother her and she acts the same as usual. I thought it would go away but it’s only gotten bigger. Please help me!

Unfortunately we cannot give an exact diagnosis without seeing Bonnie in person. I can say I don’t like the look of that lump and given that it’s getting bigger, you should take her into the vet. It’s worth the trip.

This mass seems to be a mammary gland tumor but it needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Without seeing Harley, it's hard to say for sure what this lump might be. Older dogs are prone to lots of different growths and tumors - some are benign and won't cause any problems, while others are malignant (cancerous) and may need to be removed to keep them from spreading. Especially since this lump has been getting larger, I would recommend having it checked by a vet as soon as you are able to. He/she can do a simple test called a fine needle aspirate, which involves removing some cells from the lump for analysis - this will help determine what kind of growth it is, and whether or not it needs to be removed.

This growth on your dog could be a benign tumor or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious growth should be examined by a vet. The vet can do a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the growth to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's typically painless to the dog and relatively quick and easy to perform. I would have your dog seen by a vet on Monday to have the growth examined and diagnoses so it can be treated.

It could be a benign or cancerous mass, and abdominal hernia, or an abscess or seroma. I would recommend that you have Toffee examined by a vet. The vet may take a sample with a needle for examination under the microscope to help get a diagnosis and treatment plan.

It may very well be a tumor, but without a physical exam and diagnostics, whether or not it is benign or malignant cannot be determined. You can choose to monitor it at home for rapid growth or change, discharge, bleeding or discomfort then have Pepper seen by your veterinarian or you can schedule an exam right away. Your veterinarian may perform a fine needle aspirate to collect samples for pathology or schedule Pepper for a biopsy procedure to collect a more substantial sample. Treatment options will depend on the results of the exam and aspirate/biopsy.

I am very sorry to hear about your dog. What you are describing sounds like most likely a tumor. There are many different types of tumors. Two of the more common we see in this area are lipomas, which are fatty tumors and feel soft/squishy, and sarcomas which are firmer feeling. Unfortunately it sounds like this is large and causing her problems. She needs a visit to the vet's office to examine the tumor and see if it can be surgically removed. They may want to take an x-ray and may want to do what is called a "fine needle aspirate" to collect cells to try to identify the type of tumor before surgery.

Why does my dog have a bump underneath her chest by her private area?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Without seeing Bella and feeling the lump it’s hard to say what it is. Dogs can get fatty lumps and cysts that are not serious but they can also get masses that are serious. I would take her to the vet when they open next so they can examine it closer. They may need to get a sample from the lump and look at it under a microscope for a better idea. Good luck and kisses to Bella!
