My cat licked topical flea medicine. Is ingesting it harmful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

I put over the counter topical flea medicine ( HARTZ) on the Back of Bitsys neck as instructed. She is trying to lick at the back of her neck, trying to lick off the medicine. I don't think she is able to reach where the medicine is, but, if she does somehow licks a small amount, will it hurt her?? Thank you, Jewel Haines

Hi Jewel, Yes it could be harmful if she ingests it. I really don't recommend using Hartz products - they are not very safe. If you need a flea prevention please use one of the name brands like Advantage II or Frontline. Always put the product high up on the neck so the cat can't reach around and lick it.
