Help! My cat keeps peeing on furniture. Is it medical or behavioral?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

Hello. My cat has had problems peeing on our furniture for the past 2 years that we’ve had him. We’ve thought it was litter and have continued to try different methods. It can be frequent or less depending. I’m just wondering if this could be a medical problem or what we could try to help him if it’s more behavioral. With it going on so long, I didn’t think it was medical because he doesn’t show discomfort or pain as far as I can tell.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. This certainly could be behavioral as there are no symptoms you are describing that indicate a urinary problem. I would recommend placing multiple litter boxes throughout the house and trying pheremone therapy with a product called Feliway (collar and spray). I would start with this and see if these help with the problem. If not, then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him and discuss other options for treatment. I hope this helps!
