Can I give my dehydrated puppy human saline injections at home?

I have leftover Saline Pre-Filled USP IV Flush Syringes of 0.9 Sodium Chloride Injections. Can I administer these subcutaneously to my puppies as a pick me up when they’re a little dehydrated ? Will it do more harm than good ? I have experience in administering SubQ fluids and have sterile needles and syringes left but wanted to be reassured that these fluids are good for subq and aren’t harmful ?

I do not recommend doing this unless specifically advised to by your vet in certain circumstances. You may accidentally do more harm than good. It's always best to consult with your vet before attempting any at home treatment.

Hello, this should be ok to put in their nose, however, it may not treat any underlying infection your puppy may have as it is just saline. Additionally, using excessive amounts of this could cause further irritation of the nose. Finally, if not positioned correctly, then he could inhale some of this fluid and develop pneumonia. You should speak to your veterinarian before using the nasal spray to make sure its indicated to do so. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about your puppy. IV bags and the fluid they contain need to be sterile so that is impossible to do at home. Plus the fluids are balanced meaning they are very similar to the fluid in the body. You should take your puppy to your veterinarian and let them do an examination. Puppies with parvo need to have medicines that stop the vomiting and antibiotics which protect them from getting septic or developing blood poisoning. The sepsis is usually what ends their life along with the dehydration, weakness, etc. Your vet can maybe work with you on dispensing fluids for you. Again, I would get the puppy seen immediately.

I would go ahead and continue the fluid administration as directed by your vet. It won't hurt him and more hydration will definitely do him some good. I would definitely follow up with your vet when they are open again.

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about Sadie's troubles. You can offer Sadie some pedialyte - that won't hurt anything. However, it may not help as much as something like fluids under the skin or intravenous fluids that she can get at the vet office, because she may just throw up the pedialyte. Dogs that are vomiting and/or have diarrhea can be at risk for becoming dehydrated, sometimes even if they're drinking. There is always a certain amount of fluid loss in the vomit and/or diarrhea that cannot be replaced with simply drinking water. There can be many reasons a 7 month old dog is vomiting too, so I will briefly discuss those, and then ask that you keep an eye on Sadie. If she isn't improving in the next 12 hours or so, she should see her veterinarian. Parovirus is a gastrointestinal virus that unvaccinated puppies can acquire. Thank you for submitting your question regarding the puppies. I'm sorry to hear that they have parvo. I believe you are referring to subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids that are given under the skin as opposed to intravenously. This allows it to be done out of the hospital. The fluids help to keep the puppies hydrated in the face of ongoing fluid losses through continued vomit and diarrhea. Your veterinarian will need to provide the fluid bags, supplies and instruction on how to administer the fluid as well as appropriate doses for each pup. There are several types of fluids that can be used on this will be based on the needs of the individual puppies. I hope this information helps!

I am not able to take parvovirus infected puppy to any hospital, how to treat, like home remedy at this stage?
The only thing you can do at this point is to try to keep Orioz as hydrated as possible. If you can find a syringe, and syringe-feed water or electrolyte formula to him every few hours, you might be able to keep up with the fluid loss from the vomiting/diarrhea. Otherwise, he will die from dehydration. This is why intravenous fluids are so important, since these dogs are usually too sick to keep any oral fluids/food down. This is all you can do at home. Poor little guy!

She is not expected to improve even if she was eating the honey solution necessarily. I highly recommend you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian. There are many causes of dehydration and given her symptoms, I would recommend having her blood tested to rule out kidney disease or any other systemic diseases / infections. She will likely need a course of subcutaneous fluids, which is when fluid is administered under the skin and absorbed by the body. This is an effective way to hydrate an animal and is well tolerated. Hello, thank you for your question about Leo. It sounds like Leo is definitely feeling quite ill. Lack of appetite can be caused by many underlying causes such as problems in the GI tract or things such as liver and kidney disease. If you are unable to get Leo seen by a veterinarian for bloodwork and further diagnostics I would give recommend administering saline, normal or half strength. One additional recommendation would be to offer him a bland easily digestible diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. Hope this helps, good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. Apart from antibiotics, providing fluids is the most important thing for a puppy with parvovirus. This is ideally done with hospitalization and an IV catheter, but if that's not possible your vet may be able to give fluids subcutaneously (under the skin), and may be able to teach you how to continue doing that at home. Otherwise, puppies with parvovirus can very quickly die of dehydration due to all the fluid being lost through diarrhea. I hope this helps, and I hope your puppy feels better!
