My dog's eye is red and scratched. Can I use Neosporin on it?

My dog's eye got scratched at the dog park today. I'm not sure if it was another dog or a stick or something. He has some redness on the lower eyelid underneath his eye. Is it okay if I put some Neosporin on this? I'm not sure what to put on it and I don't have any saline. I wasn't sure if it's ok if it gets into the the eye?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about J. No, do not put Neosporin on it, it's not safe for eyes at all. It could get into his eye, and hurt him. You can use some cool water to clean the area, and then have him seen by a vet in the morning. He needs to have his eye checked to be sure there isn't damage to the cornea, and the vet can treat the scratch. Best of luck, I hope this helps,

No, I would not use this on Mila. This could get into her eyes, which would not be safe. In addition, she may just rub it off with her paw and then ingest it, which is also not safe. It's important to treat the reason behind why she is scratching around her eye, which could be due to allergies, a foreign body, or an eye infection. If the cause if the scratching isn't treated, she will keep doing it and make the scab worse. In addition, by scratching around her eye, she may have accidentally scratched her cornea, and her eye should be examined for damage. I would take her into a vet now. The vet can determine what is causing her to scratch her eye, and can treat it.

Do I need to take my dog to the vet? Or can I use polysporin drops for his eye? It is red and itchy and lots of goop coming from it.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I’m sorry to hear Eddie is having eye issues. Red eyes with discharge in dogs can be due to a variety of reasons, including allergies, an eye infection, a scratched cornea, dry eye, or another underlying issue. While antibiotic drops may help with some of these, they may not fix it depending on what the cause is. I would recommend Eddie be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his eye issue, have any necessary testing done (eye stain, pressure check, tear production check) and what medications (if any) he may need. My dog has been scratching his eye. It looks red and teary, but I do not see anything. He has been at home today. The only other thing is that he likes rolling in the patio's mulch. Can I put "blink tears" in his eye or should I take him to the vet.

I'm very concerned that he is scratching his eye, and he could really damage it with his claws. I also see in the pictures that he's holding his eye closed, which suggests his eye is painful. I would not put anything in his eye without having him seen by a vet. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into a vet immediately. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. That medication should be safe and work fine. I’d apply it 2-3 times daily for 7 days. Put an E-collar on to prevent him rubbing at the eye. My dog has scratches on his face from digging his face to the concrete. Is it safe to put Neosporin on his face?
Dodger sounds like he is quite uncomfortable! Neosporin may help but ultimately you are going to want to try and identify why he is so itchy. You also want to put a stop to the itchiness in order to prevent any more damage. Depending on the extent of the damage he has done, he may require a systemic antibiotic to treat a skin infection. Scratching at the face is usually caused by an allergic reaction to something, typically environmental, contact, or even food. A food allergy just starting at the age of eight would be uncommon but not impossible. You should look into an e-collar for Dodger (or make a home made one) in order to prevent him from itching until the problem is resolved. Medications are also available to address the itchiness Dodger is experiencing including both steroidal and non-steroidal options. Your veterinarian will be able to discuss these options with you in some detail once seeing how your dog actually looks.

That looks quite red and irritated! Although quite safe on superficial wounds, dogs groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. I would take Brownie into the vet this weekend to have this diagnosed and treated. This looks not good. This could be a spider bite or similar problem and you need to take your dog to a vet today for an exam, clean up of the wound, exam of the eye, making sure there is no damage. Please do not wait, it will not get better by itself. Do not put any more Neosporin on the area, as Neosporin, unfortunately can cause allergic reactions that look like this.

My dog has redness in his right eye and a silver dot on it also like it got scratched . It don’t really discharge just a tiny bit. Is there anyway I can treat it. I think it was a scratch from a play fight.
Eyes are very delicate organs. If there is an injury it is always best to have your vet check it. Eye injuries can go from bad to worse quickly and then you risk losing vision and/or the eye itself. I have not seen the eye so it's hard to give advice. It is up to you though what you want to do. If you want to try something at home you can try this eye gel. If no improvement after a couple days of treatment then he needs to see the vet. I would use it 3-4 times per day. My dog has a small open wound on his hind leg, it had a small mass that I though was a tick, but was not. I have put neosporin on the wound and he is relaxed now. I just want to know if this is something I should be concerned with.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This wound is certainly very small and will most likely heal up on its own if you leave it alone and maintain it clean. I would not advise the use of neosporin or any other topical ointment as it is a bit deep and those are not indicated in internal tissue. I would just ensure that it remains clean and that he does not lick at it or traumatize it any other way. If it does not resolve, then have him evaluated. Good luck and have a good evening!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! At least based on these pictures, this looks superficial enough that it should be ok with topical therapy. I think applying a triple antibiotic like Neosporin twice daily for 7-10 days would be a good idea. This may make Zelda to be itchy. For this reason, if you notice her scratching at her head, use an e-collar to prevent self-trauma as that may delay healing. Otherwise, this should heal well shortly. Good luck and have a great day!
