What's the best way to clean my dog's teeth? Do dental chew sticks work?

What is the best and easiest way to routinely clean my dog's teeth? Are the chew sticks beneficial? She has great teeth and I would like to keep them healthy. Any specific recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Sasha. Good on you for caring about her dental health! The best thing I can recommend is daily brushing with a canine toothbrush and canine toothpaste. I love the CET brand of dental products for dogs, they are excellent. Chew sticks are ok, and you can use something like Dentasticks as a daily treat, but they won't have as good effects as brushing. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco. I would recommend using CET enzymatic toothpaste, which you can find online or at your local pet store. I would recommend buying a rubber bristled finger brush to apply the toothpaste to the teeth. You can also try Oravet chews, which contain Delmopinol, an ingredient used to slow or prevent the formation of plaque. Oravet is typically only available at the vet clinic so you would have to go to a clinic to buy these chews. I hope this helps! Hello! I personally love the Greenies brand dental chews for my dogs! You can also smear some dog toothpaste on their other toys, like a nylabone for example, to make a fun teeth brushing treat for him. :) I hope this is helpful! Thanks for using Boop by Petco!

Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. It's great that you're thinking about Teddy's oral health! It is best to brush Teddy's teeth daily using a toothpaste formulated for dogs. There are lots of good options, so try a few out and see what flavors Teddy likes, but I recommend an enzymatic toothpaste. Could you please recommend some good dog dental treats?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! One of the best ways to maintain dental health is with regular teeth brushing, at least several times a week. Because Korbyn is fairly young, it will be possible to train him to accept having his teeth brushed by providing plenty of praise and treats during the process. Treats can also be given to supplement brushing, you should look for treats that have enzymatic properties as well as ones that take a while to chew, as this action strengthens the jaw and removes tartar. I also recommend keeping Korbyn on dry food to promote good dental condition. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Great question! I really like the CET brand of dental pet products. I would get Voodoo a pet toothbrush and toothpaste, and brush her teeth daily. You can also get her Dentasticks as a daily treat.

Would it be benifical to give my dog science diet t/d dental care diet as treats? She gets royal Canin for cavaliers as her main diet but I like the idea of the dental care diet as treats? Would this still provide modest benefits to her oral health?
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. t/d diet, dentisticks and other dental care treats have minimal beneficial effect if any. Cleaning teeth daily and regular dental checks work much better. Please, stick to that, as dental care diets are in my opinion, not worth the money.

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco! The gold standard for at home dental care is brushing teeth. However, we all know this is not easy for you or your pet!! If Lilly will let you do so, then yes, I recommend getting a silicone tooth brush (finger or long handle- whichever is easier) and brushing her teeth all the way from her back molars to her front incisors. I also recommend the dental chews called OraVet. They tend to work a little bit better reducing plaque and maintaining better smelling breath. You can likely find these dental chews at your local veterinary's office. With age and time, dog's teeth tend to build tartar more quickly. Therefore, I recommend brushing, dental chews and even particular dental food. Thanks for being so on top of Lilly's care! You are doing a great job!

My dog has a very sensitive stomach and I think the denta sticks I give him to clean his teeth give him diahorrea so I was wondering if giving him a raw carrot a day will be just as effective? I've read they're good for their teeth?
HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am sorry Ziggy is sick! Sadly there isn't a perfect treat to keep a dogs teeth clean. Veterinary dentists recommend brushing their teeth AT LEAST three times per week. Anything less isn't doing anything. If Ziggy has a lot of tartar build up already then it is best to have an anesthetic (put under) dental to have his teeth cleaned, X-rayed and extracted if infected. Then brushing his teeth 3 or more times per week will hopefully keep the tartar away. Below is a link to the Veterinary Oral Health Councils recommend products. Hi, my dog needs a deep teeth cleaning. I have some economic issues so I'm saving the necessary to cover at least a monthly payment. In a while what can I do to not get worse? He doesn't like the toothbrush.

How many times a year or month should my dog get his teeth cleaned at the groomers? And is it bad to give my dog rawhide treats?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend daily teeth brushing with dog toothpaste daily. Groomers only brush a dogs teeth when they are groomed- likely every 6-8 weeks. That would be like us brushing our teeth once every 6-8 weeks. It’s not a bad idea but it’s not going to do a whole lot in the long run. I also recommend a professional teeth cleaning by a veterinarian every year- to remove plaque, polish after (very important after plaque removal), and to check for problems/bad teeth before they cause other problems. Rawhides are not bad but they will not take the place of daily dental care. Also, they can cause intestinal upset so I do not recommend them frequently. They also have a lot of calories so you have to make sure Scooby doesn’t gain weight when feeding them. Kisses to Scooby!
