My guinea pig died. How to help him cope and find a new friend?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 2.3 lbs

my other guinea pig died a few hours ago from old age. Parsley doesn’t know what happened but how do I know if I should get a companion for him and if there is anything I do can do to help him cope with the loss of his brother? Thank you in advance

I'm so sorry you lost your guinea pig, please accept my condolences for your loss. Parsley may be just fine, he may not even be aware of it. I'd hold off on getting another companion for now, as that may stress him out. Just keep an eye on it, and if you notice a decrease in appetite or activity, those can be signs another companion can be needed. Give him lots of love and attention. Again, I'm sorry.

I am so sorry that you lost one of your guinea pigs! You are right that guinea pigs are social creatures and tend to like other guinea pig's company. However, you need to consider some things before getting another one. First - do you know why your guinea pig died? If it had an infectious disease, you would be putting a new guinea pig at risk too. In this case, I would recommend following your veterinarians advice. Also, do you have an adult male or an older female? Males tend to fight if you end up getting another male, but females can do well together - especially if they are relatively young. If you do get another guinea pig, try and introduce them in a way that they cannot fight - with a screen separating them or in cages that are close together for a while. Once they seem comfortable with each other, then you can try them together! There is no reason for you to wait to get another one, unless you think your guinea pig died from an infectious disease. I'm very sorry for the loss of your pet. Without a post mortem exam, it is difficult to say what could have caused such a sudden death. It may have been a genetic condition, infection or something in the environment. These little critters are very adept at concealing illness or injury even from experienced owners. You should take some solace in knowing she likely did not suffer. Monitor your remaining pig for any unusual symptoms or behaviors. Gradually reacclimate her to you. This can be done by introducing your hand into the cage for short periods of time and slowly increasing the length as she progresses. Provide small treats each time you interact with her. Once she has accepted your hand IN the cage, try petting her gently for increasing periods of time. Talk softly and move slowly. If she allows you to hold her, start off again with short periods of time until she accepts handling. It may take some time but be patient and be consistent.

I am so sorry for your loss. I would recommend taking ozzy to the vet to make sure he is healthy before introducing a new friend. It is possible that your guinea pig that passed away did not have an infectious disease but it would be good to make sure. Sometimes guinea pigs will get along and sometimes they will not. If you decide to get ozzy a friend I would introduce them slowly to make sure they get along. Hope that helps

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your loss of your guinea pig. Its hard to lose them. I would agree that they do enjoy company. You may try to get a similar aged pig. Be careful with the introduction as there may be some fighting. Keep the new pig in a separate cage and swap cages daily to get them use to the scent. Then after a week or so, introduce them in neutral territory. Do not leave them alone and unsupervised until you are sure they are not going to fight. Make sure to get another female. You can get a young pig or one closer in age. Which ever you choose, have her examined by your veterinarian to confirm good health. Introduction should be gradual. Begin by having them in separate cages side by side. This way they can see, hear and smell one another but have no physical contact. Once they are acclimated, you can gradually introduce them for short periods of time under supervision. Clean and rearrange the cage you choose so it appears to be "neutral ground for both pigs. Rub some of the bedding from your first pig onto the new one before introduction. This scent transfer will help acclimation. Allow them to spend more and more time together while monitoring for signs of aggression. Provide extra food bowls, water bottles, etc to prevent resource protection or food aggression.

Thank you for your question about your guinea pig! In general, yes, guinea pigs are very social animals and thrive with a companion. However, there are exceptions to that general rule. To be able to tell if your guinea pig is okay without a companion, there are a few things to do. First is to ensure that your guinea pig is healthy and in a good body weight - this can be done by taking your guinea pig to a veterinarian for a wellness exam. It will provide you with a baseline for health, and then you can continue to monitor your guinea pig at home. Once you have determined that your guinea pig is healthy, then you can evaluate its behavior. If it hides a lot, or doesn't come out to see you or make noise when food is being provided, this may indicate that it needs a companion. Guinea pigs that are comfortable being alone will interact with their humans much like they do with other guinea pigs - lots of excitement! Sorry about Patch. Spend lots of time with Buddy to try and fill contact time. You should probably wait until ensured that Buddy is doing well, eating well. Adding a new rabbit into the scene could possibly add more stress. Good luck.

My guinea pig wont eat or drink water. About 3 weeks ago our other guinea pig died. Could it be sad?
It is not typical to see guinea pigs mourning although it is possible. I would be more worried that this guinea pig may be coming down with an illness especially since you had another guinea pig die recently. I suggest you get him/her to a vet for an exam as soon as you can to rule out a medical reason for the symptoms.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. I am sorry about your little Guinea pig. In terms of survival of the baby, you have a difficult road ahead of you. Unfortunately it will be very hard to get this little baby through alive, but it is worth trying. You will need to feed the little pig a product called Critical Care. Milk is not good for Guinea pigs so don't feed this. Some pigs will eat off a spoon and some will need to be syringe fed. It is important to syringe feed very slowly and carefully to avoid having the fluid go into the lungs or causing aspiration. Also, it is important to weigh little Zeke immediately, and daily, to ensure that Zeke is properly gaining weight. Keeping Zeke the right temperature is important as well, so make sure Zeke has a warm, dry and clean environment. Zeke will also require help urinating and defecating for the first week or so, so ensure you are wiping the genitals and anus with a wet, warm cloth multiple times a day and that Zeke is peeing and

My Guinea pig is not breathing the vets are all closed
I am so sorry. If Brownie doesn't take a couple of breaths in 1 minute, he may have already passed away. If he is still breathing, even if very slowly, make sure he stays warm, you can try to rub some honey on his gums to prevent hypoglycemia. If he can swallow, you can syringe some water or pedialyte very, very slowly so that it doesn't accidentally go into his lungs. He should see a vet as soon as one opens.
