How long is DHA important for Ragdolls switching to adult cat food?

How long is DHA important in diet for a large breed cat? I know the standard to switch from kitten food to adult cat food is one year, but what about cat breeds that are slow maturing such as a Ragdoll?

I have a Ragdoll as well! They are my favorite breed of cats. I switched my Ragdoll from kitten food to adult food when he was a year old, and he was just fine. He's a massive boy, 17 pounds. It's fine to make the switch at a year. You can also feed Tallulah a breed specific food. Royal Canin has a Ragdoll formulated food.

I recommend switching to adult right at 1 year of age, but if you wanted to make the transition now I think that would be fine. If she seems to be doing well on her current food it's a good idea to stick with the same brand.

When is a good time to transition cats from kitten food to adult food?
Kitten food is specially formulated for kittens to achieve proper growth and development, and as such, is higher in calories than adult cat foods. Kittens should be fed kitten foods until they reach about 90% of their adult size, which typically occurs around 10-12 months of age. Any time a diet change is made, it should be done so gradually to minimize the risk of developing an upset stomach with vomiting and/or diarrhea. Transition the kitten food and adult food by mixing the foods together over 5-7 days, beginning with 75% old food and 25% new food for a day or two, then 50% old food and 50% new food, and then 25% old food with 75% new food.

He is beautiful! He should be getting kitten food until at least 12-18 months. Kitten food has a different calcium and protein content than adult cat food that is important for proper skeletal development and growth. You could try a different brand if he no longer seems interested in the kitten food - be sure to make a slow transition from one food to the next.

1) Get a kitten, that is at least 12 weeks old. That way it had time to socialize and playfight with its siblings and Mama had time to teach it everything it needs to know to be a good kitty. 2) Feed it good quality brand name complete kitten food 3) Put the water dish at least 5 ft away from the food dish 4) Kitten toys: lots of crinkly paper balls are a great toy for kittens, a feather on a long string and a rod....you can "fish" for your kitty.... 5)Get a comb and a brush and start combing your kitty regularly so it gets used to it and learns to like it. Ragdolls can have problems with matted hair if not combed regularly. 6) Get hair ball remedy just in case 7) Give it LOTS of love. The more love you give your kitty, the more love you get back. Be prepared to ba climbing tree for your kitty....it is normal 8) Get a scratch box for it so it learns to use it and stays away from furniture 9) Please do not have your kitty declawed. You can discontinue or decrease the amount of chicken being fed. A good quality kitten diet, such as the Roytal Canin your are feeding now, will fulfill his nutritional requirements. You can feed the kitten food 3-4 times daily, decreasing the feedings as he gets older.

Yes, you are correct that you need to make the switch from kitten food to adult food, and I would recommend doing it slowly to avoid GI upset. Start adding in adult food to her kitten food, and over the course of two weeks, increase the amount of adult food and decrease the amount of kitten food until she is eating the adult food only. Other than that, the only thing you need to make sure to do is get her vaccines boostered :-)

A purebred Maine coon should eat kitten food until they are 15 months old so Goliath should probably eat kitten food till he is about 12 or 13 months old. Since he is a mix, he is not likely to get as big or grow as much as a purebred Maine coon. When he is a year old, have him examined by his veterinarian who may be able to get a good idea of how much more growth you should expect from him or if he appears to be done growing. Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. You may absolutely feed them Royal Canin kitten food as long as they are under 1 year of age. If they are not kittens then it’s not a good idea to feed them kitten food because this has more calories than they need and will cause them to become overweight and at high risk of developing diabetes and arthritis issues. You can try feeding them a similar adult food with the same protein in it as the kitten food. Check your local store and online store for more protein (beef, chicken, turkey, salmon, etc) options. Kitten food has more calories and has more calcium and other minerals in it needed for proper growth than adult cat food does.
