What to do for feral cats with goopy eyes, runny noses, sneezing?

Hi. I have a lot of feral and stray kitties I feed. Most have been dumped as I live outside of city limits. A lot of them have goopy eyes, runny noses and are sneezing. Is there an antibiotic powder I could put in the water for them? Any advice you could give me would be most appreciated!! Thank you

You can try starting them on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight.

Most upper respiratory issues in cats are due to a viral infection, so it's best to give an anti-viral supplement to help. You can give Sivko over the counter Lysine powder or gel from your local pet store or vet clinic daily to help ward off the symptoms. If he doesn't get better or starts having breathing issues, then a secondary bacterial infection is likely so it's best to have him seen by your veterinarian for further care. Also you can inquire with your vet about nasal drops that can help his sneezing symptoms.

Frisbee's sneezing and watery eyes could be due to viral infections (such as calicivirus or herpesvirus - not contagious to humans), bacterial upper respiratory infections, or topical irritation/mild allergies. I'm glad to hear that he's still eating well and active! Fortunately, none of these possible issues are contagious to humans and viruses are most commonly specific to a single species. You can try an over the counter L-lysine amino acid supplement (Viralys is one example) to attempt to help with any shedding from some of the viruses mentioned. Ideally your vet should examine Frisbee to assure that he does not have a bacterial upper respiratory infection that may require antibiotics for treatment. Your vet may also discuss antihistamine options for Frisbee. I hope that he's on the mend soon!

Kitten needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Many cats will get viral infections that cause sneezing and upper respiratory symptoms. Some of these kittens will get viral infections that also affect the eye and can cause painful ulcers which can progress and dive deeper into the eye (which is not good). Lysine supplements for cats may help with viral infections in general but your kitten still needs to be examined today. The doctor needs to check the eye for an ulcer, scratch or perhaps a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. You must also protect the eye from any scratching with an elizabethan collar.
