My cats have black, itchy ears. Is Sentry HC ear mite medicine safe?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Both my cats lately have been scratching and shaking their ears. It seems to be getting worse. I looked in one of them and it's very black. As I'm skeptical about OTC medicine, I was wondering if it'd be safe to try, Sentry HC Earmite Free Ear Miticide for Cats, 1-oz bottle. I don't want to harm my kitties, but if it would be safe then I'd like to try.

The problem is that ear infections in cats can also be caused by yeast and bacteria in addition to ear mites, so this may not be the right medication for their ear infection. The best thing to do is take them into the vet to have it confirmed they have an ear infection and what is causing it so they can be treated correctly.

It is difficult to diagnose an ear infection without examining the discharge under a microscope to see if there are any bacteria, yeast, or mites. Based on the pictures, it does not appear to be a large amount of discharge. There aren't any OTC ear medications for infections but you could clean the ear with just an ear cleaner labeled for cats and see if that helps. Clean three times a week for now and then once weekly and see if that gets rid of all the discharge. If not, he really needs to go to a vet for treatment.

Hello. I have just discovered that my cat has ear mites. The vet prescribed Mitex combined with Bremamectin as treatment, Stronghold and Etiopic. Is the combination between Mitex and Bremamectin safe for cats? Is Mitex containing Pyrethrins?
I recommend you contact your vet to confirm the multiple medications and directions. Ear mites in most cases are quite easy to eliminate - thorough cleansing with an ear cleaner will remove the wax and majority of ear mites and stronghold is e,ffective against remaining mites. I am not familiar with the brands available in your area but a search for 'mitex' appears that some do and some don't contain pyrethroids. Cats are sensitive to pyrethroid products but the small dose used in ears, when necessary rarely causes significant side effects. Until you can confirm the full prescription I would apply the stronghold and cleanse the ears with epiotic

Would zymox Otic HC plus work for possible ear mites? My cat has an over production of ear wax.
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Sweetie. Unfortunately Zymox Otic HC contains enzymes and some hydrocortisone. It will help with itching, inflammation, and pain but will not treat ear mites. I would advise letting your vet take a look at Sweetie after getting a thorough history. They can then advise some diagnostic tests to evaluate what is going on with the ears. They can do an ear smear where they take some of the ear discharge, put it on a slide, and examine it under the microscope. Ear mites, bacteria, yeast, and foreign bodies can all cause ear infections/ear problems. Ear mites are contagious to all pets in the household so it's important to diagnose and treat that appropriately. There are topical flea/tick products that also treat ear mites and there are topical ear medicines which can address a variety of ear problems. Good luck with Sweetie.

Hi there! This does sound consistent with an ear infection or ear mites. I'm not sure if you got any medication from your vet or not? If not, it sounds like you probably need some ear drops to treat the problem, and your kitties may also need steroids and/or antibiotics for a week or two to help the skin heal if the problem is severe. I would recommend calling the vet who saw them in the morning to see what medication they can send home for you.

If one cat has ear mites, all other cats have ear mites, too. There is a much more effective and shorter way of getting rid of ear mites. You should take them to your vet who will check the ears and verify that it is either ear mites or a possible bacterial or fungal ear infection. If it is a mite infection he will give your cats an injection with a miticide such as Ivermectin or use Revolution for cats This will have to be repeated 1-2 times and the mites will be gone. A bacterial or fungal infection needs to be treated with with and antibiotic or a fungicide, respectively.

I think my cat has an ear infection . I think it may be mites but can’t be sure with vets surgery’s only open for emergency treatment at the moment what can I do? Is there anything she can be given ?
Ear infections in cats can also be caused by yeast or bacteria, and are more common causes of ear infections in adult cats. Ear mites are more common in kittens. In order to treat Belle properly, she does have to see a vet, and vets will see pets for sickness. This counts, as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. Give her vet a call to make her an appointment.

It appears that your kitty is suffering from an ear infection which could be caused by ear mites, bacteria or a fungus. You will need to take him to your veterinarian for an ear exam and correct diagnosis as each of these causes are treated differently, Your vet will take an ear swab and look at it under the microscope. He may also prepare the swab in such a way that he can identify bacteria and fungi. Treatment for mites is usually either acaricidal ear drops which will have to be given over a period of time to kill the mites and their eggs and larvae or injections, bacterial infections are treated wit antibiotic ear drops and fungi (usually yeasts) will also be treated with ear drops. Please take bear to a vet soon, as an ear infection is very itchy at best and painful at worst. There is always a chance that your cat can suffer hearing loss as well.

It could be allergies. Even if the vet didn't see mites, I would recommend that both cats be treated with a topical parasiticide like Revolution that will treat ear mites and fleas (the other common itch). Other possible causes for itch include food allergies and environmental allergies. Some pets can be allergic to lots of things that don't cause itching, but when they start to build-up in the body they reach their itch threshold. You can talk to your vet about a dose of zyrtec or claritin to try. But some pets can be managed by staying on flea preventatives and a diet for allergies.

I think ear mites are more likely than a fungal infection in the ear of a cat with these symptoms. I would recommend talking to the vet about Revolution or another topical treatment for ear mites. All other cats in the house would also require treatment.

I would caution against using Hartz to treat ear mites. That's because it's an OTC medication, and it will not be as effective as medication you can get from the vet. I would recommend getting Revolution. It's a spot on flea treatment that also kill ear mites. You don't put it into their ears, but apply it on the back of the head where they can't lick it. I recommend using that on Benji.
