My old hamster is very sick. Should I take him to the vet for his symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old

I know my hamster is getting old, and he’s gotten sick recently. We thought he wouldn’t survive the night (like our other hamsters) but he kept going -he can’t use his back legs but they do shake -he has laboured breathing -he can’t eat dry food -we have to wipe his eyes everyday I’m just wondering what this ‘disease’ could be or if he’s just getting old? How often should we feed him since we can’t feed himself? I would take him to the vet but they don’t know much about hamsters

Morty sounds really bad, and leaving him like this would be cruel. Dying is not a pain free process. He has to see a vet now, even if it's just to put him to sleep. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
