Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs
my 3 year old cat has been coughing for about 2 weeks -- long coughing spells lasting 2+ minutes but only ca. 3x/day. Started her on oral azithromicin 4 days ago. Her coughing spells are shorter but continue. 2x she has coughed/vomited out mucus. Always an indoor cat. No balcony, no contact with other cats in the past 3 years. Appetite good. She's active, perhaps somewhat moreso since I started the antibiotic. Any notion of the cause?

It could be a respiratory infection. Unfortunately in cats, respiratory infections are typically called by a virus, which means antibiotics won't work. There are few things you can try at home for Esther. First, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.
