My 6-week old kitten throws up kibble & sleeps. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 7 days old | 2 lbs

I found a approx 6week old kitten. She refused to drink cat milk so I tried giving her kitten canned food. She only wants to eat hard cat kibble that my other cats eat. She started throwing up yesterday when she wakes up I’m assuming because she can’t digest the hard food. What can I do to get her to eat? She seems to be sleeping a lot more too.

How lovely of you to take in Marnie. Dry kitten is fine to feed her, she is old enough for that. She may be throwing up because she is sick, and that would cause her to sleep more too. Please take her into the vet in the morning for a health check.

Since this has been going on for a while and your cat is consistently not able to keep down dry food I would be concerned that there is an underlying issue going on. The fact that she is not gaining any weight is also concerning. I would recommend taking your cat to the vet to be examined. Since she is young there is a high likelihood that she may have intestinal parasites that are causing the vomiting and failure to thrive. In the meantime, until you can get to the vet, feed her only canned food, or hard kibble that has been softened with warm water, since she seems able to keep this down. I hope this helps. Poor Sweetie! In older cats, I would be concerned that the vomiting is caused by kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a foreign body, or intestinal lymphoma. I would take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly an ultrasound to determine what is causing her vomiting. Once the cause is found, the vet can recommend a possible treatment.

I have barely 6 week old kitten. I adopted her from a shelter. I picked her up Saturday noon. She was eating hard food and drinking Whiskas kitten milk which is a different brand from the agency. She has been fine, playing, wrestling, all day Sunday
Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry she is sick! If she is eating a different brand of food from what she was fed at the shelter, this could be the cause of her GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Sudden changes in diets cause GI upset in cats, and they need to be transitioned slowly to a new food. I would withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I found a kitten outside and took him in but he's not eating foreal and not playful only thing he does is sleep he looks at least 3-5 pounds and he's been throwing up
How lovely of you to take in this little kitten, but he sounds very ill at the moment. It's very concerning that he's not eating and he's been throwing up. I think he needs a vet visit right away, he can easily become dehydrated from this vomiting. He needs medication to stop the vomiting, probably IV fluids for hydration, and any other treatment the vet deems necessarily . Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hello, my kitten pukes his dry food quite a lot is that normal for a month old kitten?
Hello, sorry to hear about Silk. It is not normal for a kitten to be vomiting frequently. However, some kittens may vomit if they eat too much or too fast, although still, this should not be frequently. If Silk is vomiting often, I would worry that he may have some kind of infections such as a parasite or an abnormality in his GI tract. Other things such as an allergy to his dry food may also be considered. The best option would be to have Silk evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure he does not have an infectious or congenital disease that needs to be addressed with something else besides a diet change. Your simplest solution would be only feed him wet food. However, you can try a different kind of dry food which doesn't contain the same ingredients as the one you're currently feeding. Again, this would neglect any condition which may require more aggressive medical therapy. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I was just wondering since Miss Kitty will turn 12 yrs old on 24th of this month, what would make her throw up her dry Meow Mix I've had her on since she was a kitten ? Hoping it's her just over eatting.
It can be due to an illness. In cats that are Miss Kittys's age, vomiting could be due to something like kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or even cancer. I would have her seen by a vet in the morning. Best of luck.

We've recently taken on a cat, approx 9mo. He vomited x3 yesterday and x1 so far today. Several hours after eating. Some visible bits of dry food in vomit. He's underweight. He had a traumatic day before he came to us so I'm not keen to inflict stres
The vomiting could be caused by stress, diet change, infection, parasite, etc. You could take a fecal sample to a vet for testing to make sure he doesn't have a parasite. You could also feed him a bland gastrointestinal or sensitive stomach diet and see if that helps. Otherwise, he needs to be examined and treated by a vet. He may need an anti-nausea medications and a gastrointestinal protectant to help. Hope he feels better soon!

Oh no, poor little Domino! I would try offering her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts. This bland diet may help settle her stomach. If she won't eat it or if she eats it and vomits, then I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning.

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. I can understand your concern when you see changes with your kitty. I would be inclined to know just how much she is eating and if she has any fever, which can indicate infection. At this age she is transitioning to solid food and should be eating around 3-4 times a day. She should be on solid canned or dry kibble and eating roughly 1/4-1/2 can/cup at each feeding. She also may be growing so that could explain the extra sleep she is getting. If she doesn't have a fever (>102.5 degrees F rectal temperature), then I would consider all these changes a normal progression of a growing kitty. Also if she is eating roughy what I mentioned above. However if she does have signs of illness then a vet visit is recommended to determine what underlying issue is there so that she is treated appropriately. I hope your kitty is just fine and going through normal growth changes. . Best wishes and take care.

Does white cottage cheese like vomit from 8 week old kitten, feeling hot and sleeping for hours mean she is ill?
That is not normal behavior from a young kitten. Yes it sounds like she has a fever and stomach upset. Since she’s so small and sick she should have veterinary treatment soon so she doesn’t get worse. Healthy kittens are very playful and don’t vomit or sleep that much. Please take her in for treatment. They will give medication to resolve the vomiting and reduce her fever if she has one.
