Is it safe to adopt a stray cat if my cats tested positive for FCoV?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am looking after a stray cat for about a year and after long process of not healing a large wound and amputation was done. He responded excellent to the surgery. My concern is that his corona virus tested positive for antibodies. I have 2 indoor cats which are older and have also tested positive. I am thinking of adopting the stray but do not want to put my 2 cats at risk. One of my cats test shown a very light line in the antibodies results. Is it safe for my cats to keep the stray at home?

According to a study done in 2015: "The prevalence of antibodies to feline coronavirus in single-cat households is approximately 25%, whereas in some multicat households, all cats may have positive titers." If they are all positive for antibodies, then it may be safe to have them all together at home. Check with your vet.
