My cat has a wound, swollen leg, and foul smell. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat came home last night with a small puncture wound on his upper right back leg. His right back paw is also swollen and he won’t put pressure onto this same leg. He smells foul by his hind end and underbelly. He ate and drank for me this morning and now he’s sleeping comfortably. When he stretches out, he ‘yowls’ and meows until comfortable again. What could this be?

He probably has a bite wound from another cat and now has an infection (abscess). You need to get him to a vet so, at the very least, you can get him some antibiotics. Leaving him with an infection is not a good idea especially on a limb. The infection can enter the bone and/or the blood and cause serious problems. Please take him to a vet ASAP.
