My dog killed a rat, now has fever and lethargy. What should I do?

Hi my dog killed a rat around my chicken coupe he has done this many times but this time he has become ill. Will not eat and has fever. Has gone out side but is vary lathargic.. has updates for shots.. suggestions

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Dude. That’s not good. Rats carry many diseases like leptospirosis, which can pass along to a dog. In addition, if the rat was poisoned with rat poisoning, that will make the dog sick and kill them. I’m very concerned about him and I think he needs to see a vet immediately. Please take him into an ER vet now. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear that Leo has been bitten and does not seem to be feeling well as a result. Unfortunately, given that it was a rat which it him, as well as he fact that Leo now has a fever and seems unwell I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian for as soon as possible. It seems highly likely that Leo has an infection from the bite. Especially considering that Leo is such a young pup, it is important that he is seen soon. His immune system is not fully developed and therefore may not cope as well in fighting the infection as an adult dog.

Hi I found a dead rat w/some blood in my dogs bed and I think he might have licked it or maybe chewed it, I'm concerned he can get sick or get us sick what should I do to prevent this?
You are correct that the rat can carry diseases. I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what happened. They may want to check him for any bites and booster his vaccines. The main concerns for rats are Leptospirosis and fleas who can carry plague depending on where you live. Theoretically, rabies and rat poison ingestion would also be a risk. Your veterinarian will be most familiar with your local environment and the potential diseases. Also make sure Brady is up-to-date on his flea prevention. There are a couple things you should be concerned about, if your dog is not vaccinated then leptospirosis is a concern as Rats carry it and it is a serious disease in dogs (affecting the kidneys and liver). the main second concern is rat poison, if the rate ingested rat poison in the past couple weeks, then your dog could be poisoned too, these poisons are usually blood thinner which cause an animal to bleed to death, often it has a delayed action and the treatment for that is vitamin K, which must be given by your vet by injection first.

My dog just killed a rat in our garden, do I need to take him to a vet?
Examine your dog for any sign of injury due to the fight with the rat (if any). If any (which is likely, sometimes even inside the mouth) take him to your veterinarian for an examination. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid licking/scratching at the wound. If your dog is not vaccinated for Leptospira, take him to your local vet anyway. Antibiotics may be needed. My dog killed a rat in the yard this morning. He didn't eat it but I'm not sure if it bit him or not
In these cases close monitoring is needed both for any possible wound/injury from the fight and possible poisoning (some of these rats can be poisoned with rodenticide). Any external wound, lethargy, inappetence, signs of cough, vomiting or diarrhoea should be checked by your local vet.

There is nothing to be done to prevent Toby from developing rat bite fever if he has been exposed. You will need to monitor him for lethargy, fever, loss of appetite or anything else out of the ordinary. An exam with your veterinarian would be recommended if Toby develops any symptoms. A course of antibiotics can be used to treat infection.

My 5 1/2 month old basset hound that weighs 30 pounds swallowed a rat whole. He is acting fine it happened about an hour and a half ago no vomiting nothing he has drank water and gone number 2 as well. He is running around playing.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Silly Camper! My primary concern is actually the status of the rat. If it was dead or lethargic, or if there has been rat bait placed anywhere Camper could have gone, you need to see your vet first thing in the morning for Rat Poison antidote. Taken as a preventative, it should prevent any problems from occurring. Rat Poison is often FATAL in dogs if not treated and early treatment is very successful. So if there is ANY possibility, please see your vet. Otherwise, continue to monitor Camper. As long as he remains playful and energetic, with normal stool and no vomiting, you do not have much cause for concern. If any of that changes, its time to see your vet. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! There is no way to know if there is a fever without a thermometer. Based on what you are describing, it sounds like he is quite sick. He should ideally be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If you are unable to have him evaluated tonight, make sure to do so as soon as possible tomorrow. A fever could be due to many reasons like pancreatitis, an infection, among many other possibilities. Treatment would be based on findings but at the very least they can start him on fluids which can help with a fever. If possible, have him evaluated tonight so that they can start looking for possible reasons to explain his symptoms but most importantly, so that therapy can be initiated. He may not be eating due to dietary indiscretion from eating the bird or mouse or it could even be due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. I am afraid that if he is not drinking water he may be becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and most importantly start him on medications to make him feel better.
