My puppy ate raw ground beef. Is eating raw meat safe for dogs?

I brought some minced beef from the butchers and it was on the side, turned around and my puppy had knocked the plate off and ate the mince. Will he be ok?

Ha ha that was deliberate of Hugo! You know he knocked the plate off so he could get the mince. The raw meat will likely cause some stomach upset. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or loss of appetite, have him seen by a vet.

It definitely has potential to cause a gastrointestinal infection, or an upset stomach, but dogs tend to handle raw meat better than people. This is because dog's have a lower stomach pH and are adapted to handle infected meat. It's possible that this may cause vomiting and/or diarrhea, but in most cases this is temporary and will resolve within a day or two. My American Staffordshire terrier jumped on the counter a ate about 2 pounds of raw ground beef. It’s been a couple of hours. He hasn’t throw up and is just laying on the couch. Breathing is fine. What should I look out for
Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Consider withholding food for the next 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. If Dexter develops stomach upset without any other symptoms, you can fast him then offer a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If he becomes lethargic, stops eating or develops abdominal pain then he should be examined by your veterinarian.

Hi there! There are a couple of risks associated with eating a pound of raw beef. Aside from general GI distress, dogs, like humans, can contract foodborne illnesses, such as E.coli. Pancreatitis is also a consideration, as that much meat could potentially be a lot for the gut to handle, especially if it's not lean. I would keep a close eye on Brooke for signs of stomach upset, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. I also strongly recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning for further advice. If any symptoms develop, you should bring her to the vet right away for treatment. I do not recommend giving her anything over the counter at home without a vet's advice. My 1yr old, healthy, vaccinated, Harrier breed puppy got into the garbage. He ate roughly 200g of very expired raw mince meat. He seems absolutely fine, but I wanted to check with an animal expert. Thank you in advance.
As long as he is not vomiting repetitively or seems very lethargic i would recommend just monitoring him for now, do expect some diarrhea for a few days. if he shows severe symptoms you will need to take him to the vet for treatment, fortunately dog's stomach can usually handle expired meat much better than we do.

Hello, sorry to hear about Hudson. Indeed, dietary indiscretions like eating raw ground beef can cause the signs you witnessed. Most often this is self limiting and a bland diet for the next 3-5 days should allow his GI tract to rest. You can offer a bland diet and observe him at home, if his vomiting continues or gets worse, he becomes more lethargic, or develops other signs such as diarrhea then he should be evaluated by his veterinarian. A bland diet may consist of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and cottage cheese low fat. Hope this helps and best of luck.

My small dog has recently eaten raw ground beef and is now having bloody loose stools. Whats going on?
Most dogs can tolerate a raw meal. The amount may have caused GI upset. Bad meat or fatty meat can also be the cause. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop or your dog becomes lethargic or exhibits symptoms of abdominal pain, see your veterinarian.

This can cause pancreatitis in a small dog such as your Puppy. If he starts excessive vomiting and has a stomach ache then bring him in to your veterinarian immediately for treatment. Dogs are scavengers so he could be fine. I definitely would monitor him closely and seek veterinary care right away to prevent a serious problem if he seems ill.
