My dog keeps licking a spot. Is it a hot spot? Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 48 lbs

Could this be a hot spot? Riley has been licking it like crazy. I got hydrocortisone lotion from pet store and am using it but he I still licking. It is getting a little bigger but not an open sore yet. This picture was taken yesterday morning.

This doesn't look like a typical hot spot but the area is clearly bothering Riley. Be careful with the hydrocortisone cream. He may be licking it off, and the ingredients are not safe for him to ingest. I'd have him seen by a vet for this problem.

It looks like Stella has a hot spot. The area should be clipped with clippers and scrubbed with an antiseptic wound cleaner. An oral antibiotic and a corticosteroid may also be needed to help the lesion heal. A lot of times hot spots are associated with allergies so you could talk to your vet about keeping her on an oral anti-histamine. Hope she gets better soon!

My puppy keeps licking this area.
I'm not 100% sure what this spot is from just by looking at a photo. It could be just an injury but it could also be ringworm or skin mites (mange) or the start of a hot spot. I suggest you try this hot spot spray gel, 3-4 times per day. This spot popped up on our dog a few days ago. We didn't think much of it but she just keeps licking it and now it's really tender and hurts her if it gets touched even a little bit.
Seeing it in person is the only way you can fully diagnose, but I would be suspicious of an early hot spot- a local area of skin infection. These can come from many things, bug bites, allergies, etc. I would consider giving the area a bath with gentle soap and water- be sure to rinse and dry well. Discourage her from licking it. Sometimes antihistamines and prescription antibiotics are warranted. I hope this helps!

Those spots on Riley could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching and he may need to wear and Elizabethan collar at all times. Since he is still licking the lesions, it's hard to know if the changes to the lesions are a sign of recovery or a worsening. You MUST stop the licking. If the lesions don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined again by the veterinarian who may prescribe additional medications. Large red irritated spot, not to sure what it is. Seems to be bothering him he keeps licking the spot. Do you think it’s anything to be worried about or should I leave it be and see if it heals on it’s own.
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Buddy and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I would be worried about it, it's obviously bothering him and the licking will be making it worse. Without seeing him in person, I can't say what is causing it. I do think he needs to see a vet for it. The vet can diagnose what it causing it and can treat it. I would take him into the vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

My dog has a reddish skin rash may look like because he keeps licking its inflammated and i don't know what it is.. can you help me
Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps! How worried should I be about this? He keeps licking it.
I'd be worried in that Harley keeps licking it, which shows it's bothering him. From your picture, it looks like he has licked that area raw in a spot, so I would definitely have this checked out by the vet. Give the vet a call today or tomorrow to make an appointment for him. Until you can have him seen, put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. You can get one at a pet store, or I can put a link below on how to make one at home. This small spot has been on my dog's inner, front leg for awhile. It's not as dark as it used to be, I assumed it was maybe a scab. But she's been licking at it lately, so could it be a hot spot?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dolly. The picture came through a little fuzzy, but it does not appear to be a hot spot. These are areas of red moist irritated skin that tend to be larger. They come up rather suddenly and cause the dog discomfort from the start. It almost appears to be a wart like growth on her leg. These can scab over from time to time can cause the dog to lick. Either way, I would place an E-collar on her so that she does not continually lick and aggravate the area further. If it is still bothering her on Monday, she should see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

Is this acral lick granuloma or a hotspot and if the latter, how do I know if it is caused by allergy or anxiety? She is on a prescription diet due to her vets recommendation. She is a service dog, so limiting what kind of surface she will walk on is
It doesn't have the appearance of a lick granuloma. It could be a hotspot. Hot spots typically have an allergic component. You can discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use with your veterinarian An e-collar (cone) can be used to prevent licking. Minor hot spots are treated topically. My dog has an area that he continues to lick that is getting larger and more red with time. Could this be something like ringworm or just a hot spot that shouldn’t be worried about? Please help. How should this be treated?
Clearly this area is bothering Buster, and it could be due to allergies, a hot spot, or a skin infection. You need to have him seen by a vet to get this diagnosed and treated. I'd take him into the vet in the morning.
