My dog has allergies & arthritis. Why is she licking & biting?

My dog is 9 years old, shih tzu. She has seasonal allergies so we are used to her itching year round, sometimes more than less. She was recently diagnosed with arthritis. I’m not sure if this is the cause but she is compulsively licking, biting and scratching at her paws and all over her body. It’s so much every day that even if I stop her , she has to go right back at it. I’ve seen her scratch throughout her life but never lick her paws constantly and bite all around her body. What can it be?

Allergies can be worse over time, so it could be Bella's allergies causing this behavior. Pain can also cause this behavior. I'm wondering if she is on pain medication for her arthritis. If not, I would get some pain medication from the vet for her. Please do not give her any human pain medication, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

If it is always the same exact spot and she licks mostly at night before bed or when she is nervous then yes it may be behavioral. If she licks on all feet and both arms then it could still be allergies. Dogs can have allergies all their life. You could try 25mg Benadryl twice a day but she may need something stronger like a steroid or apoquel to help control the itching which would need to be prescribed by your vet. Also, if you haven't tried a food trial, consider trying a low allergen diet like natural balance limited ingredient diet venison and sweet potato. A true food trial needs to be done for a minimum of 8-12 weeks to rule out food allergy. Finally, of between her toes are really red or goopy, she may need antibiotics or an anti-fungal to help. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. Medications like prednisone or Apoquel can help with the itch. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergi

Poor girl, that looks very uncomfortable. I would be very suspicious that Bella has allergies to something that she's still being exposed to. The most common causes of allergies are food, fleas, and the environment (like human hay fever). I would recommend going back to the vet to confirm there isn't something more acute going on (like a new superficial infection) and then discuss possibility of allergies. She may need a longer course of antibiotics and/or oral steroids to calm her immune system down as well.

Dogs often get these hot spots (aka acral lick granulomas) for a few different reasons, but it seems like this may be due to allergies. Harley may be over-licking the area because it's sore, or it has an infection. In fact, these types of lesions tend to develop infections in the skin despite the cause. It could also be somewhat of a habit she developed. I think it's best to consult with your vet about this, because they will know more about her case and can ensure that she gets the necessary treatment. You can also do a few things at home to help treat for infection and keep her from licking too much. Here are my recommendations: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the sore skin. 2) Wash/spray the area with just cool, clean water (no soap or other antiseptics) for at least 5 minutes at a time. Do this at least twice a day. 3) Bandage the wound with gauze and apply an over-the-counter antibacterial cream (i.e Neosporin) to the wound. Keeping it covered and

Licking and biting on the paws and legs is a classic sign of allergies so he may be suffering from an allergy. It could also be secondary to anxiety or possibly pain. The best thing would be to have your vet examine him to determine the cause and treat the problem. Once diagnosed, your vet can prescribe medications to treat.

my dog is biting herself up to the point where her back is raw and bleeding her and the other pups play fight alot idk if that can be a reason why she is the way she is but she just keeps biting at it and i dont want to leave it untreated her name is
Poor Bella sounds very itchy! This itching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If she isn't up to date on her flea treatment, I can give you one for her. First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If she is up to date on her flea treatment, I recommend taking her into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. I am sorry to hear about Bella Roca! These symptoms you describe can be seen with allergies in dogs. We can have allergies to things in the environment like grass, pollen, dust, etc. We can have allergies to flea bites. We can have allergies to food ingredients. If allergies are mild, we can sometimes treat them with a fatty acid supplement and an antihistamine such as Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or Cetirizine (Zyrtec). I would recommend discussing Bella's symptoms with her vet to see if they feel an antihistamine will be safe an appropriate for Bella. Fatty Acid supplements are available over the counter at your vet, pet stores, or online such as the Omega Benefits product at VRS https://www.vrshealth.com/canine-products/?petcoach=1977956 . This would be the starting point for most dogs with these symptoms. My dog bites and licks and scratch himself. I dont think he has fleas. But why does he do that?

I would recommend using the below following products to see if they help relieve the itching. If the symptoms persist, I would recommend switching to a different food to see if a diet change relieves the allergies. My dog licks her feet and on occasion the furniture. She chews at and violently licks her paws. Why does she do this? Thanks! x
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your question. This could be due to behavior, allergies, pain from arthritis or due to irritation. If you suspect she is dealing with an allergy, you can use a steroid spray on her feet such as Pramosoothe spray and apply this twice daily. You can find this spray online quite easily. If this does not help, then I would discuss arthritis treatment with a veterinarian and get a prescription for a pain medication to see if this helps with the behavior. If she continues to lick, this may be behavioral. In behavior cases, I typically recommend giving a new toy or a kong toy filled with peanut butter to distract the dog. You can also use products such as Adaptil collar and spray along with NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin to help establish a calm environment / mindset. I hope this helps! Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. What you are describing sounds as though Bella has a behavioral problem with excessive licking. The licking could be due to anxiety or boredom. Anti-anxiety medications can be trialed and your veterinarian can prescribe these or you can also contact a certified animal behaviorist in your area to discuss options for deterring Bella from licking. I would ensure you are providing Bella with plenty of distractions from licking, like a treat filled puzzle toy or long lasting dog chew. Kong makes a hollow chew toy that you can fill with treats or peanut butter and this tends to work well. If anxiety is the problem you can try over the counter supplements before resorting to anti-anxiety prescription drugs. NaturVet Quiet Moments calming chews with Melatonin seem to work well with calming dogs. I would try this first and the toys and if no improvement, discuss further options with your veterinarian and contact an animal behav
