My cat has gingivitis. Is brushing her teeth at home safe?

My cat has signs of gingivitis. Will it hurt her if I start to brush her teeth? She had a teeth cleaning with the vet last year, but her gums are already a little red and slightly inflamed again. I hate the idea of putting her under anaesthesia unnecessarily, so can I try to do something at home? I’ve tried gels and plaque off, neither seem to keep it at bay. She eats dry food only and seems to have no pain or issues eating (she’s very healthy otherwise) Thank you!

I think it's a great idea for you to start brushing her teeth, and that can help with the gingivitis. Be sure to use a pet toothpaste, as human ones are toxic for cats. You can get a pet toothbrush and paste at a pet store. I'd brush her teeth three times a week. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jackie. If she has gingivitis or redness along her gum margins, she should go under anesthesia to have her teeth professional cleaned. Red gums indicate an infection in the mouth. This is actually more problematic than tartar accumulating on the teeth. Gingivitis leads to bad breath and a destruction of the attachment of the teeth. If left untreated, this can lead to chronic pain in the mouth and the eventual loss of teeth. As far as at home care, I like Maxiguard Gel as it is easier than brushing a cat's teeth. You want to look for products with the VOHC seal as these are approved for use by veterinary dentists. These products can really make a big difference for Jackie's oral health and her overall quality of life. I hope this information helps!

Once your kitty had his dental cleaning , brushing his teeth with enzymatic tooth paste will prevent the build up of tartar and gingivitis. Brushing his teeth while he still has the excessive tartar will not remove it and also hurt the gums, as the gingivitis is painful. You can use water additives, but in my opinion they do not do much for the breath and his teeth. The bad breath is caused by bacteria in the tartar and below the gums. It will go away as soon as the teeth are cleaned.

How can I cure gingivitis in my cats
You can brush Roxzy's teeth with a cat specific toothpaste (do NOT use human toothpaste) and a cat toothbrush, but ultimately the only way to cure gingivitis is with a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing at the vet. I'd make him an appointment to get that done. Best of luck.

My vet said my 15 cat has gingivitis, what do I do? I would love a second opinion on what to do. Please help
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums around the teeth. In cats, it can be quite serious and cause significant pain. Sometimes a dental cleaning to remove the tartar from the teeth will cure the problem, but in some cats it becomes a recurring issue that needs more aggressive treatment. In the worse cases, we will remove all the teeth in an effort to make the cat more comfortable. If Tyson has never had a dental cleaning by a veterinarian before, it is probably about time. Pets aren't as prone to dental disease as humans since they don't eat much sugar, but if they can still produce tartar. Routine brushing of your cat's teeth can prevent some of the tartar buildup, but it will not be able to remove what is there. If you would like to confirm your vet's diagnosis of gingivitis, I recommend taking Tyson to a second vet for examination. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I do recommend brushing your cat's teeth on a semi-weekly basis to help maintain healthy teeth and gums, and it's never too early to start on good habits! The most important thing to do is use a pet toothpaste, as their fluoride requirements are different than ours. I would choose a flavor that she likes. Good luck!

That looks like pretty painful gingivitis. There also may be some lesions on the neck of the canine tooth (FORL). Your vet will inspect the whole mouth and may suggest a tooth cleaning under anesthesia where the teeth are also cleaned underneath the gingiva. Unfortunately the teeth can look very clean, but underneath the gingiva bacteria congregate and cause tooth decay, inflammation, and, in serious cases, heart and kidney disease, This is not an emergency, but should be addressed soon.

Gingivitis in cats is usually caused by an autoimmune reaction, in some cases it could also be related to a viral disease they get at a really young age. in both cases treatment is limited, sometimes a course of antibiotics and anti inflamatories solve the problem for a while, other times steroids are more successful short to mid term. if the condition persists and become severe, it's usually recommended to have part or all teeth removed surgically, this almost always solves the problem permanently but it is a very invasive procedure. Regarding food, if she is not painful and is crunching on the kibbles without problems, you can feed dry only or a combination of both. if she seems to be in pain when eating then you need to feed her only wet food.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! You are my hero for trying to brush Nala's teeth. If you haven't tried to start with the left side first, do that. Yes, at least getting the enzyme tooth paste on the teeth will do something. The brushing does help the most. Try to brush at least 3 times per week. They also make a tooth brush that fits on your finger tip, that may work better for her. Also check out the link for the Veterinary Oral Health Council's recommended products. Otherwise just keep trying! Practice makes perfect and also hopefully Nala will acclimate. She may still be sensitive on the one side from the cleaning.
