My puppy ate a wooden knob. When should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 3 days old | 55 lbs

My dog, a 6 month old husky shepherd lab mix, ate a wooden knob off of my nightstand and I believe she chewed it and swallowed it. The screw fell back into the drawer itself (thank god) but I cannot locate the knob so I believe she ate it. She seems completely normal. No loss in appetite, normal behavior, no vomiting. Should I take her to a vet? She’s still super chipper and acting like a puppy. I don’t know how long it has been missing either. (Had to have been a day maybe two)

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center with your question about Ellie! Oh no, that's not good, but it is good she didn't eat the screw. Given that you think it may have been a day or two since she ate it, and because she is acting normally, I'd just keep an eye on her for now. If she starts vomiting, stops eating or has a loss of appetite, has diarrhea, blood in her poop, starts acting lethargic, and/or has any other concerning behavior, then I would take her into the vet right away. I would monitor her over the next week to be safe. I hope this helps!

Oh no, that was naughty of Chloe! At this point, all you can do is monitor her. It wouldn't be recommended to induce her to vomit, as the wood could get caught in her esophagus or damage it on it's way out. The wood could cause some damage to her GI tract as it passes through and/or could cause an obstruction. Monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, blood in the vomit, lethargy, or constipation. Should you see any of those signs, I would take Chloe into a vet right away.

Hello. It is amazing what can pass through the gut of a dog. I am sure the wood Piper chewed up has softened & should pass without incident. As long as her appetite continues to be normal, I would not be too concerned. If she should stop eating, develop any diarrhea or painful defecation, develop a firm & painful abdomen, or appear to have a fever, please see your veterinarian immediately. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Shea. Thankfully she is a large breed puppy. Hopefully the piece of toy will pass in her stool. Monitor her bowel movements for the next few days. If she stops eating, starts vomiting or acts sick, then you need to seek emergency veterinary care. This can be a sign of an intestinal obstruction. I hope this information helps!

Looks like you have a rambunctious, trouble-making puppy on your hands! Depending on the size of the piece of wood, you may or may not have a problem coming soon. Gastrointestinal foreign bodies can definitely occur when something gets stuck, or worse, if the wood penetrates the intestinal wall. The urine-soaked paper and tiny beads are much more likely to simply pass through naturally. Continue to monitor for any signs of GI upset like vomiting, diarrhea, or inappetence. With any luck, the wood will pass on its own. If it does, don't be surprised if you see some blood in the stool due to irritation of the GI tract.

My 1 month old puppy ate a dead mouse on the road. What should I do?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! My main concern with this is that may result in gastrointestinal obstruction. I would monitor him closely for signs of an obstruction such as vomiting, anorexia and/or abdominal pain. If these are seen, I recommend you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine if she is obstructed. If that was the case, surgery may be needed. Otherwise, she is likely going to be fine if she is able to pass it. Best of luck!

I don't think this is urgent at all. I think you should fast Ellie for the next 24 hours and see if she continues to have any more vomiting episodes. If there is more than two more, I would consider getting her in somewhere to get checked out. Otherwise, after the fasting period feed something bland for a day or two before resuming regular diet. Try boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburger. You can also try and obtain Ellie's temperature at home to check for fever (normal is between 99 and 102.5). Take a look at the gums to verify a nice and pink color and moist consistency. Hope this helps. I'm sure Ellie will be just fine and probably just ate something that upset her.

Poor girl. Hopefully the worst of it is over. Keep any eye on her tonight and then re-evaluate her in the morning. If she seems back to her normal self, then continue with the boiled chicken and rice for a few days to keep her stomach settled, then you can transition her back to her normal diet. However, if she continues to vomit through tomorrow, it is advised to take her in to your vet to get checked out. It's best to keep objects that she can put in her mouth and ingest out of her reach. Puppies are known to put just about anything in their mouth, and you don't want her to inadvertently eat something that she cannot easily pass. I do hope that Honey's stomach settles soon! My dog just ate the top part of a plastic fork. Should I take her in to the vet
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Depending on the size of Koda and how big the piece of fork was that she ate, will determine if she will potentially have problems or not. She will most likely be fine. At this point, I would just monitor. What you will want to monitor Koda for are decreased appetite / activity, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain. These symptoms would indicate a potential problem from ingesting the piece of fork. Problems would include an intestinal obstruction or some type of laceration / puncture to the intestines as it passes through the GI tract. Koda will most likely pass this in her stool. I would watch her bowel movements for the next 24-48 hours to ensure that it has passed. If she is completely normal in 48 hours still, I would bet that she will be ok! I hope this helps! Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. The risks of swallowing a nail include perforation of the intestinal tract, which is a life-threatening surgical emergency. They can also get iron toxicity, which can cause severe GI upset and liver damage. The best way to tell if Evy ate a nail would be to take her to a veterinarian for an x-ray of her abdomen. If you cannot bring her, please monitor her for signs of vomiting, decreased appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, and have her seen by a veterinarian right away. Otherwise, if she continues to act normal at home, she likely did not eat the nail and should be OK. I hope this is helpful!
