Is 20mg fluoxetine safe for my dog, and can I use 50mg trazodone too?

Is 20mg of flouxetine a safe dose for a 47 lb. American Foxhound given once s day? Also is trazadone 50mg once daily safe to use with flouxetine?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center with your question. Twenty mg of fluoxetine given once daily to a 47lb dog is within the recommended dose range, so yes it is safe. The trazadone dose is also within the recommended dose range when used in combination with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which is the classification of fluoxetine. There is n increased risk of developing a disorder called serotonin syndrome when these two drugs are used together, but the lower dose range of trazadone is used when they are given together to try to prevent that. The normal dose range of trazadone is higher than what Hank is currently being given. I hope this helps!

Serotonin syndrome is certainly possible with fluoxetine and trazodone together, or even just fluoxetine by itself, but what you're seeing with Luna does not sound like serotonin syndrome. With serotonin syndrome there's just too much of everything, too much energy, too much vomiting, too much diarrhea, too much muscle movement (tremors and seizures), too much pupil size. Sedation is an expected and desirable side effect of Trazodone, so in this situation I wouldn't worry. I would recommend giving a slightly smaller dose of trazodone tomorrow to see if that is enough to keep Luna calm. And always, if you're worrying about it and not sure, take Luna to an emergency clinic for an quick check in. Also, these two drugs are used together VERY commonly in veterinary medicine, but I don't think human doctors use them together, so you'll see lots of precautions against it while reading online. My dog was prescribed 100mg of Trazodone as needed for separation anxiety/sedation. I've been reading about normal dosages in dogs, and this seems like quite a bit to start off with. Is 100mg too much for a 20 lb puppy?
The dose range for Trazodone in dogs is very wide. For use as needed, published doses range from 2.2-14 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight per day. Based on her current 20 pound body weight, Luna has been prescribed 10.1 mg/kg, which is a perfectly acceptable dose. There are limited studies of the use in Trazodone in dogs, but it seems to be a very safe medication and anecdotal doses have been safely reported in excess of the published doses mentioned above. Since Luna is still a young, growing puppy, expect her dose to increase over time as she gets older and bigger. I hope this helps and that all goes well in managing Luna's separation anxiety!

Yes, trazodone is often given daily to help with anxiety. There are many options however. The most common medication for separation anxiety is Fluoxetine. It's generally my first choice when I'm looking for a daily medication. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Also, medication by it's self is not likely to work. Exercise and behavioral modification are also needed. Hello. Most times you can give Anipryl along with Trazodone safely. On occasion, if the doses were/are high enough with both drugs, you might see serotonin syndrome. I am sure your veterinarian is quite aware of the doses used & is confident that Mitch will be fine. If you do see any unusual symptoms, agitation, muscle stiffness, distress, pacing, call your veterinarian. This is easily treated. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

10 lb. Dog may have swollowed a 100 mg pill of trazodone
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. If your dog swallowed this amount, that is a very large dose for your dog. Normally we do not exceed 15 mg/kg, and that dose would be almost 23 mg/kg. If your dog ingested this within the last 2 hours, I recommend bringing him/her to your local veterinarian as soon as possible to have them induce vomiting. If it has been longer than that time, and you are unsure if he/she ate the pill, you can monitor for any changes in attitude. That amount of trazodone will likely make your dog very sleepy and sedated, so if you see any of these signs, he/she needs to be seen by a vet right away. I hope this is helpful!

Is 100 mg of Trazodone too much for a 20 lb puppy?

The dose for a 20lb puppy would be approximately 25mg every 12 hours with a max dose of 50mg. 100mg would be too high of a dose but would likely not cause significant problems. A dog with too high of a dose of Trazodone may exhibit sedation, lethargy and incoordination when walking. I hope this helps answer your question. Trazodone has a very wide dosage range due to the variation of an individual dog's response to this medication. While Alice's dose is near the upper dosage range at 13.5mg/kg, it is still within a normal dosage range. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. I'm so sorry but I'm not fully understanding why the Prozac was prescribed. For an unrelated issue or to lessen anxiety to prevent more focal seizures? Typically Prozac (fluoxetine) is dosed at 0.5 to 0.9 mg per pound orally once per day. So for an 85 pound dog 40mg is actually a touch under the lowest part of the dosing range. First you need to understand why the Prozac was prescribed (for what condition) and then talk to your vet more in-depth about its use in Thor's case. I would not personally be concerned about using this low dose of Prozac in a dog with a history of only one focal seizure. Do not abruptly stop giving Prozac unless he has only been on it a few days. They must be weaned off slowly. So again, my recommendation is that you speak to your vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The vet told me to give 1-3 100 mg trazondone to my 56 lb dog
That dose range is acceptable. The low end of dosing would be about 1.5 100 mg tablets for issues such as anxiety from fireworks, anxiety going to the vet’s, hyperactivity after a surgery where being calmer would be ideal. Unless your dog is super aggressive and the trazadone was prescribed prior to a visit for the safety of the veterinary staff, I would start with one 100 mg tablet and see how much of an effect it has on Ivy for the purpose indicated. If she doesn’t not seem appreciably calmer 30 min after the first tablet, you can give a second 30 min later.
