My dog has a growth in his mouth with a bad odor. What should I do?

My dog has a growth in his mouth. There is a slight odor but no other symptoms of oral cancer, signs of discomfort or changes in behavior. What should I do?

Thank you for the picture of Jackpot's mouth. That is quite large and if there is slight odor, that suggests infection. This is something that definitely has to be checked out by a vet, it's abnormal looking and it appears to be uncomfortable. He could be uncomfortable without showing an obvious signs. I'd give his vet a call now to get him an appointment asap. I hope this helps!

That is quite a large growth. In a dog her age, there is always a chance it could be malignant. It could also be a benign growth. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give her vet a call tomorrow to make her an appointment. Best of luck.

This is a growth on the bottom of our Pitty's mouth, behind a lower canine. Is this cancer, benign tumor, or something stuck in the gum? It's actually my daughter's dog. She said that she has seen it before.
That does look concerning. Unfortunately there is no way to tell from the appearance alone as to whether or not it cancerous. You are correct in that it may be a benign growth, it may cancer, or it may some sort of inflammatory mass from an infection of the gums either due to a dental problem or due to an embedded bit of small stick or something along those lines. Gingival hyperplasia (overactive growth of the gum tissue) is possible, however it usually appears less "mass-like." If she is still eating, active and happy, make an appointment with your vet at your convenience in the coming weeks to have it checked out. If she is not eating or otherwise seems ill, or if you are noticing that her breath is really bad, get her in as soon as you can. Your vet may recommend that a biopsy be considered. A biopsy is the only way to determine what exactly it is, how dangerous it is, and what needs to be done about it. I hope thats helpful for you! Thanks for using Boop by Petco!

I have an appointment for the vet but not until January 15th. I just noticed this abscess? growth? On my dogs front upper jaw. It doesn't seem to bother him. He eats and chews bones like it's not even there. I noticed when I went to clean his teeth.
This looks like an epulis, a fairly common benign tumor in dogs. It occurs more often in short faced dog breeds. I recommend getting it checked by your vet to determine what kind of growth it is and what needs to be done about it. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly imaging depending on if you vet believes they need it. Based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and the best course of treatment.

I just found some kind of what looks to me like a growth or sist of some kind in my pug/Boston terrier and I’m really freakin out he’s my best and only friend i don’t no what to do
This looks like benign gingival hyperplasia. That is an overgrowth of gum tissue which is common in many breeds. I would have this examined by your veterinarian to make sure as it’s hard for me to tell just from a photograph. Often this is left alone, sometimes they remove the excess tissue during a routine dental. It doesn’t look like a cancerous lesion from the photo but I recommend letting your veterinarian exam it and then they can monitor the area for any change. Hello, i've just found a lump in my maltese x shih tzu's mouth. She is about 11 years old. it is pushing her bottom tooth up. pic attached
HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Thanks for the pictures I see what you are worried about. Possible causes of the mass are: a benign over growth of gum tissue, an epulis, or cancerous growths. Some epulids are: Fibromatous, ossifying, and acanthomatous. Acanthomatous epuli, in particular, are highly invasive to the bone and are usually located on the front part of the lower jaw. It is sadly impossible to tell from just looking at the mass to say what it could be. I recommend you make an appointment with your Vet. Lucky will have to go under anesthesia, have dental X-rays taken of the area and the mass biopsied or removed, if able. I hope this helps! I wish Lucky the best!

hello, sorry to bother.my dog has a growth in her mouth.. same color as her gums, it’s actually into of one of her side top tooth. this morning I got home from work, looked in her mouth and the growth has now turned black in color. what does it mean?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Judging by the color and the fact that it is in the mouth, it is likely a melanoma, the most common oral tumor in dogs. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has a growth on her mouth. She is still active and eating. Do i need to take her to see someone
This could be just a wart, but could also be a malignant growth. It is still small enough to easily remove it without too much damage in the surrounding tissue and therefore I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian to have this examined. The vet may decide it is better to take it out in its entirety, or he may suggest taking a bit of tissue from the growth with a very fine needle in order to determine whether it is malignant or benign.

My dog has an odd growth in his mouth
Hello. This is unusual enough that I would have it evaluated by your veterinarian. Clyde is quite young, but I can not tell from your picture if this is a cyst or a solid growth which would probably need to be removed. It is definitely an odd growth. I noticed a cauliflower looking growth in my dogs mouth today. It is attached in one place, similar to a skintag on the inner lower lip. It doesn't seem to be bother her.
Thank you for including the picture - it is very helpful. I can not make a diagnosis over the internet but I am suspicious of something called canine viral papilloma. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon to make sure it is nothing more concerning. Viral papillomas usually resolve on their own within a few weeks. However, some puppies with weak immune systems may develop a severe form, although that is very rare. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
