Why is my dog licking her discolored forelegs? Vet or home remedy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 8 months old | 12 lbs

Our dog recently started licking her forelegs more than usual and now they are discolored. Is this something that needs immediate vet attention or are there things we can try at home while we monitor it to see if there is improvement? She was just in for her annual vet visit in June and no health issues were noted. Also, she has always been a “licker” but we’ve never noticed this before.

I am so sorry Lily isn't feeling that great. While this is not an emergency, it is something that should be addressed. I would make sure that Lily is on a Flea/Tick prevention and that you bring her to your regular veterinarian. The reason she should go to the veterinarian is to make sure there is no infection in the skin and give medication to help with the itch. Also to see what is going on with her skin. I would also recommend getting an ecollar to have her wear until you are able to get her to a veterinarian. This is to help her stop licking and to help prevent a hot spot (if it hasn't formed already or prevent it from getting worse). Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
