What joint supplement for my senior dog with stiff, arthritic joints?

Can you recommend a joint supplement for my senior dog? There are so many to choose from. He’s a 13 year old chiweenie. Half dachshund and half chihuahua. He is 6 pounds and he’s seems to be getting really stiff and has arthritis. I’m hoping that some glucosamine or joint supplements may help. Something I should try that is available in Canada or on Amazon. Thanks

Great question! I really like Dasuquin and Cosequin as joint supplements for dogs. I have found that in senior dogs with arthritis, Dasuquin is a great option because it contains ASU, which stands for Avocado & Soybean Unsaphonifiables. ASU is seen as considerably more effective in regards to repairing stiff, sore, and injured joints. For Oscar, I'd recommend Dasuquin. I hope this helps!

What are good joint supplements for dogs?
Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. The GlycoFlex line of products would also be one to consider. These are my own personal recommendations.

Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is a great question! I think the ones that are specifically designed for dogs are way more complete. I would recommend you consider Cosequin or Dasuquin as both cover all the joint supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin that are great for joint health. Both of these are over the counter. You are usually able to see a marked improvement within weeks to a few months. Best of luck!

Hello, I’m sorry to hear about Diesel. Dogs can experience arthritis as they age due to instability in their joints. One of the most common places for them to have arthritis is in their hip joints. Just as in people, arthritis leads to aches and pains with movement. Supplements can be helpful with arthritis, because they contain compounds to improve joint health. However, they will not heal the arthritis and get rid of the pain completely. If the supplements don’t seem to have a large effect on Diesel, I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. They can examined his joints and look for discomfort. They may prescribe a course of anti-inflammatory medications to help with the discomfort. Hope this helps, good luck!

In your option, what is the best joint supplement for dogs?
My personal preference, completed unrelated to Boop by Petco or Petco, would be Cosequin ( http://www.cosequin.com/dogs/ ) or Dasuquin ( http://www.dasuquin.com/en/products/#dog ). Both are made by Nutromax Labs.

I am sorry to hear about Bella! A glucosamine chondroitin joint supplement every day is a good starting point but we prefer one with added MSM (such as Dasuquin with MSM), and I would also consider a daily fatty acid supplement (such as Welactin) as these can have anti-inflammatory effects in the body. There is an injectable medication called Adequan that can also help joint health that your vet can give your dog. Oftentimes, however, if arthritis is severe then prescription medications from the vet are needed in addition to these supplements. There are drugs in the NSAID group (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) that can be very helpful (one example you may have heard of is Rimadyl). What do I give my elderly dog for joint pain
Hi there! You could consider starting Sally on a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement like Cosequin or Dasuquin if you think she has joint pain related to arthritis. These supplements are very safe, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. If this isn't enough to make her comfortable, then I would recommend asking your veterinarian about prescription medication options for arthritis pain. There are a number of meds that are very effective for arthritis pain in dogs and can dramatically improve their quality of life, including Rimadyl or Metacam, tramadol, and gabapentin. Adjunct treatment options like acupuncture, laser therapy, or Adequan injection can also be helpful in some cases.

13 yr old standard poodle has arthritis. Taking nutramax Dasuquin. Want to give him chondroitin sulfate. What do you recommend. Any pain mess without side effects. Cbd?
CBD has not been studied enough in animals for me to make a recommendation. You can use it if you want but no studies have been done to determine appropriate dosing, etc. The companies making this CBD oil have no clue. The people I know that have tried it report that all it does is make the animal sleepy. It is not actually helping the arthritis. If Ciggy is in that much pain I would much more recommend a NSAID and/or pain medication combination as treatment (like Rimadyl and Tramadol combination). We know those help. I don't know which Dasuquin product you are using but they all already contain chondroitin sulfate. If you are not using the one that also contains MSM I would recommend switching to that one as MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory.
