My dog ate onion rings. Are onions toxic for dogs? What should I do?

My dog just ate 2 onion rings. I know onions are bad for dogs. She is 55 lbs. She had aten a pork ear prior which is greasy I wonder if this lined her stomach and may help slow absorption of the onion. What should I do?

Thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about GG. The toxic amount of onion in dogs is 100 grams (about the size of a medium onion) per 20kg of a dog's weight to cause toxic effects, which means that a 45 pound dog would have to eat a medium to large onion to experience dangerous toxicity levels. Luckily in this case, two onion rings will not contain that much onion. There is a concern about the fattiness of the onion rings, as they are fried, and fried and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs. I would monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a hunched up appearance, vomiting undigested food, and lethargy. If you see any of those signs, have her seen by a vet immediately. Hopefully, however, she will be just fine, and I don't think in this case, you need to do anything. Don't induce vomiting, and there's no need to take her into a vet unless you see any of the signs I just mentioned. I hope this helps!

    Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Onion can be toxic to dogs and the toxic dose for a small dog is about a quarter of a normal size onion. If Brynn ate all of the onion you put into the salad, you should contact your local vets right away. If she ate only a few small slices, she should be OK. The symptoms of onion intoxication are not specific (weakness, lethargy, dark colouration of urine) and may not be present for a few days after eating the toxic dose of onion.

    Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Onion is toxic to dogs but the amount Zoie ate is below the toxic dose for a dog of her size. Please, monitor her at home for gastrointestinal symptoms, as she may vomit or develop diarrhea. If the diarrhea or vomiting become severe, you may need to take Zoie to your local vets for an appointment.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Onion in toxic to dogs but it does not sound that Dakota has eaten large enough amount of onions to develop intoxication. The toxic dose of onion is about 15-20g/kg of bodyweight, so it means that Dakota would have to eat about 300-400 grams of onion (which is a whole large onion) to get into trouble. Please, keep an eye on her at home, she may develop mild signs of gastroenteritis (one vomit, mild diarrhea etc) but there should not be any other worrying symptoms.

My dog ate 5 or 7 onion rings what do i do
Onions can be toxic to dogs, for such a big dog this amount is not likely to be toxic but this cannot be ruled out completely. symptoms you need to be looking for: Lethargy. Weakness. Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination) Pale gums. Red or brown discolored urine. Hyper-salivation. Occasional vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Hello I just came home and my 4.6 pound yorkie has gotten into the trash and had 2 onion rings. They were heavily breaded but I know onion are toxic to dogs, just worried about her now.
Oh no, that was naughty of Piper! If she just got into the trash within the past two hours, you can take her into a vet immediately to have vomiting induced to get the onions out of her system to prevent any toxicity from occurring. Otherwise, you can monitor her for now. There likely isn't enough onion in these rings to cause toxic symptoms, but to be safe if you see any lethargy, weakness, ataxia, pale gums, hyper salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody urine, I would have Piper seen by a vet immediately.

My dog ate one deep-fried onion ring from Burger King. Should I be worried?
While onions can be bad for dogs that is not likely enough to cause any toxicity problems. However I would be worried about it being fried and causing an upset stomach and pancreatitis. This can be painful and start with a decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms, take him to the vet for testing and treatments.

my dog ate a couple pieces of fried onion petals, she weighs about 100 pounds, will she be okay ??
A few pieces of onion ingested by a dog of Mochi's size will likely cause nothing worse than some minor stomach upset, if anything at all. She would need to eat 2 or 3 med/large onions in order to be at risk of serious toxicity. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea but continues to behave normally, you can fast her for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Onion in toxic to dogs but the toxic dose is fairly high. Sadie would have to eat more than a half of a large onion (or a whole normal size onion) to get into any trouble. She may show mild signs of stomach upset, like a bout of vomit or loose stools but there should not be any more concerning symptoms.

My dog ate the tiniest piece of minced onion, will he be okay? Size of piece shown in photo.
The dose of onion in dogs that is toxic is about 0.5 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 10 pound dog, that would be about 20 grams of onion. There are about 5 grams in each teaspoon, so Marlin would have to eat over 4 tsp of onions in order to be concerned about toxicity. The biggest concern comes with dehydrated onions which are much more concentrated than fresh onions. It sounds like Marlin will be fine, but please contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns. My big dog jumped onto the table and ate beef and onions. I don't think that she ate that much, but she definitely ate more beef than onion (maybe 1-2 rings of cooked onion). She is acting normal and I made her eat water, what should I do?
If it was just a small amount of beef and just two onions, then there is little need for concern. The only concern with eating the beef would be that it might upset the stomach and in rare cases cause inflammation of the pancreas (this usually happens in cases where they eat a lot). However, the vast majority of dogs will handle it just fine. Onion is known to be toxic (causes damage to red blood cells) to dogs, but she would have to eat much more than two rings for it to be a problem. Overall, I think you have nothing to worry about, but I'll give you just a couple of things to look for as signs there is a problem: 1) Macey is acting more tired than normal. 2) Macey vomits more than three times or is vomiting for more than 24 hours. If you see this or anything else concerning, then it would be worthwhile to take Macey to the vet.

My dog may have eaten a piece or slice of raw onion. He is about 24 pounds. Will he be OK?
It typically takes ingestion of about 0.5% of your pet's body weight of onion to be at risk of onion related toxicity. This calculates out to be approximately 0.15 lbs, or around 2 ounces. Unless your pet ate anything close to that amount or more, it is not recommended to do decontamination for him. With a piece of [onion](https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/onions) that only weighs a few grams I would not be concerned. Just monitor him for the next couple of days for any GI upset, lethargy, panting or pale gums. I left a large supreme pizza (onions) on my table while I was at work and my dog ate the entire thing. I know onions are “toxic” to dogs. Will he be okay?
Oh no, that wasn't good that Stimpy at the pizza and onions. You are correct that onions are toxic, but the pizza itself also poses a big problem. Pizza is fatty and greasy, and that amount of fat and grease could be enough to trigger pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is extremely painful, very serious, and can be fatal. The toxic dose for onions is 15-30 grams per 1kg body weight. For him, that would be 422-845 grams of onions. The pizza likely did not contain that amount of onions, so I am more worried about the fat and grease. You need to monitor him closely. If Stimpy starts vomiting, becomes anorexia, has a painful abdomen, hunched back, distended abdomen, and/or lethargy, those can be signs of pancreatitis and he has to see a vet immediately.
