Dog anal gland tumor causing blockage. What's the best stool softener?

My dog has an anal gland tumor that has returned a year after surgery. It’s growth will begin to block him from passing feces. What is the best stool softener to use?

A good natural stool softener is pureed pumpkin. You can give Franklin 1.5 teaspoons of pureed pumpkin per day, and make sure NOT to give him pumpkin pie filling. There are many OTC stool softeners, such as NaturVet StoolEase and Psyllium Seed Husks, but a prescription stool softener may be best for him. I'd ask his vet about that. I hope this helps.

I would definitely not add salt as this can cause him to have salt poisoning and subsequent neurological problems. I would suggest adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to his food daily which will add fiber and hopefully allow him to go #2 a bit easier. If he is still having issues then I would have his prostate examined to check if it is enlarged and possible the underlying problem as to why he can't go easily. An enlarged prostate will push up on the colon, making the hole narrower so that poop can't easily pass through. The cure for this is to have him on a laxative through your vet and ultimately getting him neutered can resolve this issue for good. I hope everything works out for your pet Kitty. Take care.

My 12 year old dog approx 33 kg usually no problems with eating & easy bowel movements 1-2 times a day. Recent change in diet to another grain free he has been constipated(??). A stool softener for 2 + days had some result incl watery poo. Althoug
I would discontinue the stool softener as it sounds like he has plenty of movements in his bowel with the loose stools and the gas he is passing. I would consider switching him back to the old food if he tolerated that food better. I would be sure to transition him from the chicken and rice to whichever food you choose slowly over a 7-10 day period. You can add 1 teaspoon of canned puréed pumpkin (no sugar added) twice a day to help with his fiber intake. If he is continuing to have issues with his bowels I would have your vet look at him as something more serious could be going on like a parasite, viral or bacterial infection. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, bloodwork or X-rays if needed. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry Frank has cancer! Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can try adding some pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) to his dry dog food to add more fiber in his diet, which may help. Keep in mind, however, that this tumor may be blocking his anus, making it hard for him to poop, and that no diet will stop the growth of the tumor. You can speak to his vet to see if surgery is an option to remove the tumor, or if chemotherapy is an option. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

It sounds like your dog may be seriously constipated and the only material that can get by is soft stool. I strongly recommend Finn be seen by your vet as soon as possible. Hard stool building up in the colon stretches it out of shape, and it also causes stretching of the muscles around the anus, causing perianal hernias that trap the collected feces, effectively making a plug. Your pet may need more than one enema and even manual extraction of the feces in order to relieve this episode. To help avoid this in the future, you can add Miralax to the food. Miralax is a very gentle, easy to give treatment for constipation, available over the counter at any pharmacy. The dose of Miralax is 1 tsp per 50 lbs mixed in with food once a day. You can also add a tablespoon of vegetable or olive oil to his food once daily, or add a couple of teaspoons of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) to his food daily.

You can use any of those oils, and I would recommend adding a teaspoon of one of them to Einstein's food. If that doesn't work, then I would have him seen by a vet as he may need a laxative to help him poop.

I have a 1 year old Shipooh, today he went out to poop but couldn't. The poop came out a little but now is stuck. I gave him some pumpkin and waiting to see if that works but what should I do with the poop that's sticking out without hurting my dog.
Hi, and thanks for your question. Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. I would not recommend suppositories. Constipation can be a very serious condition, it can be caused by a physical blockage (foreign body like a bone) or a functional peristalsis deficiency of the intestines. In order to treat simple constipation, you should increase the fibers in the food (e.g. canned pumpkin) and can add a little mineral oil to the diet. I strongly advise taking your dog to the vet in order to check if there is a serious condition causing the constipation first.

My dog is 10yrs & is having problem trying to poop won't eat just drinking water, ate a little bit yesterday nothing today. What can I do to help him have a bowel movement?
Constipation can be caused by anal sac impaction, enlarged prostate gland, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, too little fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or even tumors in the GI tract. I recommend giving him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with his food to see if that helps. You can mix it in with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice if he is refusing to eat his normal diet. Another option is to give him a teaspoon of mineral oil or olive oil. If he is still constipated in 24-48 hours, he will need to see a vet as he will likely need a laxative or an enema. Your vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation as well.
